Title: Replacing UJs
Post by: Bob696 on May 23, 2005, 22:30:27
Rear UJ on the rear propshaft has gone.

Droped the propshaft out

Get the old UJ out and notice it dosnt have a grease nipple and has never had one :?:  It is shot to [!Expletive Deleted!].

Get the first bit of the spider in (into the coupling flange) but the 2nd set just wont go in. I managed to break a 1 ton vice trying to get it to fit. Am I missing something here? Thought this was supposed to be an easy job :!:

Are they held in with clips or a pinch nick on the ends

From what i've seen I think they are not tapered, did you inspect the yokes for any damage, or dents?

It could be, I've heard of dual size uj's, but didn't think they would be fitted on these things though, like I say most of my work is with series ones and trucks, somebody know if this is so on the defenders?

there is different types of joints but i dnt think the sizes are different, from what youve said it soinds like uve droped 1 of the rollers in the cup & as uve tryed to push the cups together its jammed it & uv probably just made the joint scrap  its hard to explain by posting as ive done so many i can practically do it with my eyes shut although i still manage to knack the ocasional 1

True, its best to slap as much grease in the rollers as poss to help hold them from falling over, its a balance of tapping a beingas careful as you can not to drop the needle bearings out

only do that if youve taken the grease nipple out as otherwise it explodes if u squeeze it in the vice    or doesnt go back together

There are a couple of different sizes, but they are different in the distance across the flats rather than in the diameter of the shells.

Aside from the problem of dropping a pin, you can also get them very stuck if they don't go in square.   Especially on a vice, as you push them in, the yoke has a tendency to twist a little, so the cap tries to go in at a slight angle and sticks.

Bob,

get yourself another set to 'keep on the shelf' as those from Paddocks dont seem to last very long - mine didnt - got the proper GKN ones and they have been much better.
