Title: have i got ACE, and whats this black box has it been chipped

heres a pick of what looks like a ram, its sited under the drivers wheel arch and connects to the suspension and i think the anti rollbar is it ACE.

also i noticed that the jack was in the back, so had a look under the bonnet and were the jack shoud go in the plastic compartment theres this black box wired into what i think is the ecu, it dosent look factory and is loose and just sitting were the jack should be, any ideas im wondering if its been chipped as it does seem quite fast to me for a Diesel, theres a code on the box P D 5ZYl

Post by: suggs on June 08, 2005, 22:58:59: cheers for the replys, i thought it had been chiped as its plenty quick for a diesell, and ive just come from a 300bhp Subaru, would like to find out excactly whats been done, ill ring DMS and see if its one of theres, im a bit concerned that it may do some damage if the turbo's spinning up to much etc, i dont know much about these piggyback ecu upgrades

thats who i used to work for & they fit the dms sytems,had a few people recently taking them off n getting the other program fitted A cos its all computer orintated so no1 knows & B it gives u more go & its cheaper

It's not chipped, it's just an intercepter box.
The ECU chip will still be standard!!

All it does is modify the signals being sent to the injectors, changing pulse widths etc...

If you disconnect the wires (most likely bodge fitted with blue scotch locks) then the engine will be back to standard.
I doubt the boost has been played with as on a TD5 Disco, boost pressure control works works differently, so no real need to shorten the actuator to increase boost....

People like Scorpian etc sell these black boxes, which IMHO is a bodge way of engine tuning anyway.
Much better to go for a tested, developed and proven chip replacement... my recommendation would be JE Engineering or Jeremy Fearn.

Take it off and stick it on Eblag if you don't want it!!

Post by: suggs on June 09, 2005, 17:51:55: well found out what it is, its made by Tunit and cost about Ã‚Â£500, and as porny said it re-programs the injectors, gives about 160 bhp and 225lb of torque, and is harmless as dosent over boost the turbo, it can be unpluged and leaves the engine as standered, ill unplug it and see what the differance is, but i must say the car does run really well and has plenty of power and has done about 250 miles on Ã‚Â£35 worth of petrol, and it looks like its been wired propley cant see any scotch locks
