Just ordered a set of Old Man Emu shocks from Devon 4x4 (N115 for the front, N44 for the rear), should be here on Friday so Sunday looks set to be a day of scraped knuckles and bent spanners :D
I'll keep you posted on my progress and the improvement the new shocks make. Apart from a spring compressor for the front, are there any other special tools that I will need, or anything that is sure to break during the job (this is my only car so I need to be prepared)? I'm not changing the springs (even though I will have to remove the front ones to fit the shocks) because I spent all my money on the shocks. :lol:

It is (apparently) possible to replace the front shock absorbers without removing the turrets. But, I would suggest you buy new turret rings and nuts if you intend to go anywhere near those nuts :wink: I took mine off and 3 out of the 8 studs broke.
I believe the part number for the turret ring is "572087", plus the nuts and washers.
Have a read of my comments here (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=8645&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45) - there's a useful hint for getting the old shocks off :wink:

Thanks Gords. Hopefully then, the springs will just stay in place when I change the shocks. I might get new rings anyway as I will probably change the springs next year sometime. It'll be nice to have them there just in case :D

On the front, if you aren't taking the springs off, then you will have to remove the turrets, else you can't get the dampers out... and this is where you can snap the bolts.... in which case you'll have to get the springs unseated anyway in order to replace the turret rings ;-)

According to the Free Online Dictionary (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/scupper) - it means to "ruin or destroy". In other words, if a stud snaps and you haven't got the above mentioned parts, you're f**ked :wink:

Good call guys. Devon 4x4 said they would send the shocks out in the morning so if I'm quick perhaps I can get the to send out a pair of turret rings and nuts at the same time (save on shipping). :?

You can try Devon 4x4, but I suspect that the turret rings are LR dealer only...

They were on the shelf last time I was down there Gords... their stores are a bit of an aladdin's cave :-)

It's much easier, with gas shocks like OME, to remove the turrets as the shocks will fully extend naturally and it's easier to compress them using the turret than trying to compress them from the bottom to get the spring back over them. You may also need to hold them up slightly to be able to get the lower bush, washer and nut on.
If you do snap a turret ring bolt then remove the turret, remove the spring, replace the turret ring, refit the spring and then lower the shocker and turret into place. :wink:
