Title: winch sabotage
Post by: the loon on June 17, 2005, 22:16:46
Just a quick question
Have heard a rumor from a friend that people have got hold of winch remotes both legitimatly and by theft etc and are spooling out cable over roof of vechicle attaching to rear crossmembers/towhitchs and seting winch to wind in effect crushing roof in half.

has anyone heard about this ?

was a HUGE problem in oz & some english t1ts started doin it so incase it started to spread up here we have a huge master switch fitted
btw how they did it was-free spool winch over roof of motor & atach to rear x member, then get a bit o wire & stick in the winch socket to short out the wind in connection then just donder off as it chops down through the motor, dont need a remote to do it

dont know much about winches but wouldnt it burn out the motor ?
I know it would probably be enougth to crush roof in but where would it stop?

nope, goes down therough the motor like cheese wire till it breaks the casings or breaks the drumm off, remember how much force the winch can pull & ur landy is only soft ally, this was in the comics ages ago & its been quite for a while

If you use a remote switch to cut the power to the winch (under the bonnet) and take the tension up so that the rope is tight (not too tight) enough to stop the lever from being moved allowing it to spool out.

They were using paper clips. There's no current passed across the switch. It all goes across the solenoids.

I caught a hoodie doin his best trying to pull the winchwire across the road on the hybrid he had actually attached it to the trees oposite my drive and was trying to figure out how to lock it off.
after a brief lesson in adjusting his focus on the fairlead and giving some remedial cranial therapy he gave me a lesson on how to run like linford christie

well done mate, use a big stick next time. You should have your winch isolated when you arent using it..They would have to get my bonnet up,which will set off the alarm. I only ever switch the winch on when i head out on a trip, imagine if a lead got damaged (it could happen) and the battery earthed itself via the winch power cable...400 amps earthing to your ,chassis,engine,wiring.....not nice and the smouldering lump that was you pride and joy 15 mins later...
plus keeps the toerags at bay!

Way to go
Thieving Scum-Bags.

Returning to winch cables, there was also cases of them in Aus being ran out at supermarkets & threaded through all the available trollies.

So when the driver reversed out of the bay, he (she) would drag a line of trollies between all the parked cars, creating a rather tense situation.
