hi a friend of mine at work has told my a horror story about his mothers mk1 disco where the oil in the sump court fire and knackerd the engine  he thinks this is a common problem so has anyone heard of this of is the little **** pulling my leg :x
thanks adam

Never heard of it, I don't think it's a common problem :)

cant say i,ve heard of this on any engine unless he means it was running on its own oil, diesels can do this and rev to extremes until they go bang but its not common and i,ve only seen it on stuff thats rolled over

It's quite common in plant machnery, when the turbo is worn and oil can leak through the seals. I've heard of it happening on a few cars too.
As for oil burning in the sump I doubt there would be sufficient air present to allow this to happen. By mass you need 15 times as much air, so by volume many, many times more.

must be rough machinery where you are then  been a plant and an AG engineer for nearly 20 years now and only seen it twice

I think you're mate has heard this when playing chinese whispers
I've heard a couple of stories of this happening, as RRB says due to worn seals etc. as Beast said, it usually leads to the engine sucking the oil from the sump to run on instead of diesel - first thing you will know about it is it will rev it's nuts off without any outside help - way to stop it is to stall the engine PDQ!
Not so much of a "common problem" but not unheard of - once in a blue moon springs to mind, probably more associated with engine's that aren't cared for or poorly serviced etc.

On a tdi Disco I understand that the cylinder head goes near pots 3 and 4 which allows engine oil into the inlet where it runs on that until it is burnt or is somehow stopped. A bit like the Barley pickers with their monster truck on C4 can't remember the name of the program. THey stuffed a rag into the air intake which got shredded before the engine stopped.
It sounds as though the original story is a mixture of a couple of "urban myths" along with some real facts.
