Title: gearbox advice
Post by: Dr Neil on June 24, 2005, 21:35:28
been to view a 200tdi thats for sale. when trying to select either 1st or 2nd gear it grates very badly and won't engage unless you are stationary, i think it is the 1st/2nd gear synchro at fault.
what i would like to know is whether anyone has replaced one of these b4 and do you need any special tools to cary out this job?
it also needs 4 new seatbelts as the front inertia reels won't release and the rear belts hven't got any buckles.
if they aren't too much trouble to replace and not too expensive i may just offer him a lower price for the vehicle to cover some of the cost as he had no luck trying to sell it on Ebay.....
one last question are greenway alligator tyres road legal?
thanks in advance Neil.....

Are you sure it isn't the clutch ?

If it is the syncros, I would say you'd be better swapping the box.

Changing the belts is simple enough... just bolted in.

if u cant get it in gear easily its likely to be either the clutch or the syncros, its easier n cheaper to just fit a recon box than strip it n rebuild,
the greenway alligators arnt road legal & this disco wouldnt happen to be a green 1 with no carpets & a snorkel??

mut admit it looked like it had been well used(abused) but it seemed a good price until i roadtested it and found out about the gearbox/ seatbelts/ tyres.
if it's going to need a g/box in it then clearly it isn't sucha bargain after all.
maybe i'll just keep my eyes open for a different one?

i see he never highlighted the gearbox problem in his add, if someone had won the auction they wouldnt have been to happy to find it needed a new g/box when they picked it up

when i tried to select 1st gear just with the vehicle at waling speed and it greated he said "with these (disco's) you have to be stationery to select 1st gear"
it's just a shame when it did the same trying to engage 2nd gear aswell

now you can understand my concerns about buying it!!
it used to have aircon fitted to it but he took that off and threw it away so he could clean the radiator out after off roading!

i agree

just think, gearbox....500 squid (serv/ex, and thats if you fit it)
clutch kit......70 squid
seatbels stuff........50 squid ( dunno prices)
new tyres.......280 squid
almost another grand on top thats without other problems you may have not seen.

for 2 grand or just under you could get a better one that may have not been offroad, and it might have the aircon still fitted
