Title: Wading plugs ?
Post by: Jimbo on June 28, 2005, 17:19:09
Found a small tool roll in the 110 at the weekend, its got a pair of waterpump pliers, couple of screwdrivers, a plug spanner (on a diesel  :? ) and what I think are 2 wading plugs (about 3/4" long, square-headed bolts).

1. Are they wading plugs ?
2. Where/what do they get screwed into ?
3. Do you use  just for prolonged exposure to deep water, or whenever you are going to encounter water - like a ford for example !

They fit in the gearbox bell housing (time for a grovel under the car!) and should be used if you anticipate deep water wading where the level is going to be consistantly above the bottom of the gearbox. Brief exposure won't be a problem. I have heard of people leaving them in but this causes a problem if you get an oil leak into the bell housing...... it is a Land Rover after all

Also, it amazes me LR don't supply a big hammer in their tool kit..... I consider it an essential item

I'm not about to go grovelling under the truck in this weather (it's peeing down with thunder and lightning at the mo !) - but I'll have a look when things are a little drier.

So both plugs go in the bellhousing - or is one a spare ?

I agree with the big hammer in the toolkit - the bigger the better in my case !!!!!

Hi Jimbo

is your D110 a  300 Tdi or Td5?

If a Tdi I think the other plug goes in the timing case cover, I hope I got the terminology right (& everythings probably spelt wrong, sorry)

If it's a Td5, like I have had for thelast 5 Years from new..............and  I've only just discovered (the other week, literaly) that I have two wading plugs for the bell housing. Doh !    which have been in there since new

I felt a right charlie for not realising all that time.

Anyway, I hope this helps you out a bit mate

kind regards, gary

Gary,

It's a Td5, and as the rain's stopped (for now) - and as I worked late last night and don't have to go in this morning  :D , I'll have a crawl about and see what's what.
