HAVE YOU EVER?
« on: July 01, 2005, 16:37:44 »
Its one you hear quite often "wont to be careful with that on there, you'll get pulled" You know what i mean. All the extra stowage tools, and general "impedimentia". That seems to attract its self to the outside of your vehicle (if your anything like me that is).My latest being wing top to roof rack ties.My point being you often get sagely advice and tooth-sucking but has anyone ever actually been pulled or nicked for such
items?
And I mean actually nicked yourself, not I had a  mate who /or I know someone who which as we know is the beginning of all such urban myths.

I've not been pulled for them, but I think attaching bits of steel wire from the wings to the rack is a BAD idea.

Pity the biker or pedestrian who gets thrown over your bonnet  :?

(That is aside from the fact that I think they are a daft idea anyway)

:? The pedestrian or bike rider who ends up on nellys bonnet has a lot more to worry about than tie downs.Like how the hell they got past the bull bar etc to get there!plus nellys bonnet is not far of shoulder hight as well. And as for looking silly well thats a whole differant can of worms. But not half as silly as driving home from a days laning with no windscreen as it was taken out by a low and hidden tree bough

The answer has to be disconnecting them between times - avoid trees during laning trips, but avoid scything pedestrians' heads off when on the tarmac.

Your roo bar will not do pedestrians any favours, but the cheese wire will readily amputate.  I'd rather have some broken ribs from being slayed across your bonnet, than lose a hand to the wires.  :D

A motorbike hitting you from the side will catapault the rider over the bonnet... if he meets a cheesewire on the way, he will land in 2 pieces on the other side.   :(

I also didn't say I thought they looked silly...  I said they were a daft idea :-)

The Camel trophy vehicles which spent much of their time in the jungle had them to help visibility and to help lift large branches out of the way.

They were attached to the roof rack (and hence the roll cage) and to the big bull bar on the front.   If they are attached to the wing tops, then if you hit anything big enough that it would damage your windscreen, you risk damaging the wing top and the forces all act to twist the eye bolt in the aluminium.   This *is* something I have seen, and isn't just an urban myth.

But, as I say.. my primary objection to them is use on the road.

 And all the above is all ready under stood.Hence the reason they are made for easy removal. But i still ask the question has any one ever been pulled or stopped for pick-axes on the bonnet, shovels on wings etc etc......

Well... this isn't an urban myth, because I know 100% for certain that it happened.

A friend was refused boarding on the channel tunnel until he removed all the tools from the outside of his 110 (axe handle, shovel, etc)

Pulled maybe taken further maybe not. It's rare that construction and use is used against you unless the particular PC wants to do you.

What should be more of a concern is that if we're talking bush wires etc. Has your insurance been informed. If not are they happy that you've not informed them and still willing to stick to insuring you. If not then the particular PC might be looking at No Insurance which is worse than some construction and use charge.

Please note that my use of the word you is meant as a general term and not aimed at you individually.

I've been pulled under construction and use before (years ago when I was into customising vehicles I suppose I still am) but the PC was Ok once he'd found out that everything was in order (insurance etc) and I wasn't actually contravening any regs. Had anything been wrong then they might have taken that side of things further.

Gonna have to disagree with you there I'm afraid... having seen the damage steel wire rope can do to a person's body, I don't think I am over-playing it at all.

Really, why?

Remember the sand yachter who amputated a woman's leg and killed her?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/lancashire/3670720.stm

He was doing 45mph.  The reports were that it was a wire in his yacht rigging that sliced the woman's leg off.

And the difference is?  :?

I'm not trying to whizz on your fireworks, but I think it's very easy to be casual about this sort of thing without thinking about the consequences.  Once the damage is done, it's a bit late to pontificate.

Yeah, have to agree with this, I kite surf using dyneema lines and these easily cut flesh under power (have seen this happen) and steel wire can only be worse.
What about the insurance company, are they aware of this mod?
And how many times have you had an unseen bow of a tree hit your windscreen? Surely by the very nature of it coming to hit the windscrren it is by definition in view......
If only I had mud Terrains........

Bush wires are ONLY legal to be left on Camel Trophy vehicles.
nothing else.
I enquired with the Police before i was going to fit them to my car.
Was told that i could be nicked!
Camels are historic vehicles and are allowed to be keeped and run in the state that they competed.
Sorry

right thats more like it,But still the issue remains what about exterior stowage and such i mean could you be stopped by a over zealous pc for a high lift jack for instance?I mean, the bush tie issue aside what can and can not be allowed for stowage.I had all sorts on the out side of my 88 an it was never mentioned by various m.o.t,s for instance.Or for that matter was ever a issue with the local rossers and lord knows we have enough of the eager for there first nick round here.

You'd more than likely be stopped because it is insecure or a danger to pedestrians, which is why mascots were "banned".

Dont know that they would be of major benefit when offroading in the Uk. As a daily commuter on my bike i would rather not test out the relative strength of steel wire in the unfortunate event i hit someone.
The only major RTA i have had i hit a vectra side on,it pulled out form a STOP signed junction, i was only doing 35ish on my gixer 1100. The only thing i can really tell you is that i cleared it comfortably. The roof is chest high side on!!   He didnt stop and the only witness said i got a good 15 feet in the air! I can only guess he'd been drinking.
On a side note one of my collegues is a hobby bobby and loves to quote crap. He told me, i have no reason to disbelieve him, that if the officer is so inclined he could happily nick you for having tools in you landrover- let alone on it. He went on to explain that if he didnt like your face he could hold you on suspision of going equipped...in other words accusing you of being a burglar or worse.
The moral , always be nice to the police if they take an inetrest in you.

And i have seen the god awful damage that a unmodified 4x4 can do to a clubman estate. But were does that line of thinking lead too.Plus i wasn't asking for a public servey on bush-ties   just the legal precident for external stowage etc,but as long as we dont get to reactionary i suppose thats o.k.

No more the fact that i often have bowsaws , axes , large hammers, etc etc  when im out and about. I keep all my stuff inside other than the hilift, discos are top heavy enough without stuff bolted to the roof.
