jackable side sills

Thinking of getting a set of jackable side sills for the disco.

I'm finding with the bigger tyres in certain possitions that they can catch on the plastic ones - my rear arches have been trimmed a little to cope but they are not catching on the sills themselves.

Can anyone tell me, if you've bough a set of jackable sills, are they any shorter than the original items, if so how much by and which ones?

Take a tape measure around Billing would be my advice.

Also, have a chat to Richard @ Mill Services... he has Discovery sills in production now... if you wanted a set an inch or so shorter, I'm sure he'd oblige.   He's a couple of stands along from us by the river.

Rebel 4x4 will make them to order too.
Give them the dimensions and they'll knock you up a pair

I think it was Rebel I tried to email but never got a reply - will try them again as they were quite cheap.

Some of the ones I've seen had a plate that covered the original sill - any ideas if rebels ones do this?  At £178 they aren't too bad either :-)

I wouldn't mind goingand may well do, but perhaps leave the wallet at home, saying that I don't think apart from side sills that there is anything I need so probably wont spend anyu money.

Saying that I could do with some extended brake pipes, but I've ben toying with a few ideas

1) disattach the brakets then weld them 1" at each side closer to each other bending the exisiting copper pipes to match

2) making up a copper extension piece (it seems to only need a standard male and female with a short section of pipe)

3) buy new pipes

4) totally modify the brakes so that the front pipes run back along the body then back up the radius arms (with an appropraite flexible section in between)

and my thoughts on those are:-

1) is easy and bodge and I wont need to bleed the brakes... however I'll probably snap a pipe when rebending as the two callipers I've taken off so far have done exactly that.

2) can't think of any reason not to try this - will have to bleed the brakes

3) will have to bleed the brakes

4) as 3

I hate bleeding brakes by the way!

I had my side bar made to measure by W&H Wheelcarriers, who will be a Billing, I gave them the length I wanted and they adjusted the bars to suit. I got the ones with the tree bars instead of the jackable ones, acts as a side step if nothing else!!  
They a galvi'ed and sprayed over the top with galvi' fittings.  :D

This is the only photo I have to hand of them, it's not very good but you can just about see them.   :?

I must admit, I've not seen the Mill Services ones first hand yet, so I'm not sure how they attach.  I do know they are £158 inc delivery.... so they are cheaper even than the Rebels ones...  good quality too.

There you go... I just saved you the cost of your entry ticket to Billing...  no reason not to come now  8)

have just emailed them.. sounds like a small company that make their own, I therefore hope that means he takes more pride than your average service drone and we'll get good quality and service - will call on monday if no reply :-)

I thought it was free to walk into billing....  Last year I parked in the pub :-) The snorkel and high lift jack was a bit heavy carrying it though!

I'd like some, however being expensive and made of GRP (i.e. glass fibre) I'd be too worried about breaking them).. Whilst glass fibre is pretty strong if it gets a whack in the right place it tends to badly craze then crack - my kit car is a GRP monocoque with the only steel in the side sills!

Not had any problems with them cracking, mind you, we don't have many trees on the island so that could be a factor!!  :-k

Still if they stand up to the Outback & Rain Forest Challenges then they're good enough for me.

 I have broken a devon arch, replacement cost 50 quid from devon!  trying to avoid hitting anything else.
The ones from paddock are cheap(sills) but you may have to shorten them by quite a bit- so if you are reasonable with the old welder you could save some brass.....i think they are about 100 quid.

I'm after a new set for my 300 tdi too. The last set I bought didn't fit and I wasn't too pleased. So far I've only found Scorpion or WH as an alternative source for Tree-Bar clad sliders. Anyone else got any ideas?

Am I to assume then that the ones that didn't fit were Discoparts?  If so, then maybe not those     Although my ones from there are very good.

Well on the recommendation of muddyweb I've spoken to Mill services.. He has standard and 2" shorter off the shelf as it were... I'm getting a set of galvanised with tree sliders for £195.. He'll powder coat them if you prefer also.. However I wanted mine for billing so I'm just going to have the galvanised 2" shorter ones then I'l paint them myself.

I'll let you all know what they are like on sunday or early next week

then take them to your local blacksmith and have him weld up the ends

thats what im doing and i am also making them into sidesteps aswell

If Rebel 4x4 dont have the side steps i ordered (a month ago, still no response from e-mail) at Billing then i will be making my own.
If this happens i'll stick it in thread that i'll be starting soon after Billing.

nothing is cheap mate

thats why ive started to get things made

like a custom built small ground anchor

and rear wing protection

also your vehicle develops to your taste and your own personal needs

No, Still not got round to it yet. Too much else to get done, CV joints, rear prop, Rangie brakes etc etc.........
I'll get round to it soon, still got to get a pair of +2" ES9000's before I fit the mountings!
