after a few years out of 4x4 i am looking to by a discovery 1996 to 1998 300tdi
my problem is trying to work out the differences between models i know that they go something like s, gs,es,xs
but i saw an ad for an s spec model with a wood veneer dash????
i saw an es badge on the wing and an xs graphic on the lower body????
some discos have solid headrests and dont
many of the models sold in autotrader dont have the model advertised
so what spec to what model
and i know that its the condition of the vehicle that is important rather than age.  :!:
Never underestimate the power of a sick mind !!!!
What would scooby doo!!!!
remember if you camp next to the toilets you get to meet everybody at least once over the weekend
R reg Discovery 300tdi  NAMED: Scooby Doo !

As you can see from the massive response.........

None of us has a clue which model has which spec

I'm pretty sure that the ES is the top spec tho with all the toys and leather etc
Vehicle history:
Discovery 200tdi - Charity - went past her expiry date
Discovery 300tdi - Clarity - went into rear of Audi A3
Discovery 300tdi - D'une  - went bang
Discovery TD5 - unnamed - just went

The xs was a lower spec to the es, it only came with half leather seats where as the ES has 'full' leather.

If you are after the top spec you need a 1996 onwards, I have a 1995 300TDi ES, and I don't have heated or electric seats (just leather), I think it was about 1997 that they added the heated front windscreen, though I'm not sure if this was standard fit or an option.

What ever you are looking for - the better the spec the easier it is to 'live' with the car (such as in this weather I would hate to have no air-con), but the mechanical condition is probably of more importance as repair bills can be huge unless you can do things yourself.

Don't forget it's a Land Rover, the higher the spec, the more things to go wrong. Never under estimate the power of the green oval to sap your bank account dry.

Good point, I originally wanted an early series vehicle on the basis that if it didn't have (say) electric windows, that was one thing less to go wrong, the only problem was my wife ( ](*,) ), she wouldn't go in a series vehicle (not to use for 'normal' driving anyway) so I had to start looking for Discoverys (still a toy for me, but a toy she can live with) and we ended up with an ES spec.

As you say, more to go wrong, and it's a Land Rover - so it will go wrong, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon!

..and it will be proveded by either Me or Sean.... :-)

S = BASIC (electric windows, dual sunroofs (optional), c/locking etc)
GS = MID RANGE
XS = MID RANGE + (half leather, a/c etc)
ES = Top Spec (a/c, leather, electric everything, top spec ICE, heated everything etc etc)

That is for 300's.....200's had factory options.....so no 2 are the same.

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works
My 300 tdi Es Disco does'nt have heated seats or screen. Also does'nt have head light hight adjusters or dash light dimmer switch.
It was a Land Rover demo vehicle so i wonder if it was under spec'd?
Has all the other usual toys through.

My 200tdi is deliberately just about as basic as you can get

No sunroof = no leak
No electric windows = Less to go wrong
No Central Locking = Ditto
No air con = Better fuel consumption and less to go wrong
No ECU = guess what - its less to go wrong.
Not even anti roll bars

But I find her perfect for what she was bought for. A family tow vehicle with awesome off road ability :D  :D

My 200 series off roader is OK on spec
2 sunroofs = no leak (sealed shut)
4 electric windows = nice in the summer on your own
Central Locking = Well, why not!
air con = I like to keep cool
No ECU = guess what - its less to go wrong.
Not even anti roll bars
Nice!!

I cant quite get my head round it either. Mine is a 300 TDi, no letters after it so I assume more basic than basic..... yet it has Aircon and Cruise Control...... explain that one then  :?
Do they all have the small seats in the boot?? Mine has those as well
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!
