it says this is a text message for you via bt and it played a jingle

now my guess is that this reverse charges your phone as ive never heard of this service before and quite miffed.

It is now possible to send a text message to a BT landline. I've had a couple from a M8.
It sounds a bit strange to start with as it's all automated (a bit like the speaking clock) and it asks you if you want to hear it.
There is no operator on the other end so your right to put the phone down on those!!

The BT privacy thing is not quite what they say it is, sure you get free caller display (which normally costs about £5 a quater) but the only other thing BT do is to sign you up with The Telephone Preference Service which you can do yourself and you can sign up to the Mail Preference Service and the Fax Preference Service at the same time, which I don't think BT will do for you.

I still wish that there was an "opt in" list you could sign up for to receive mail, fax, phone and email cr@p instead of having to "ops out"!!

We have signed up to that service, but if the calls are outside the Uk you will still receive them, they mainly come from companies who are trying to get you to enter competitions.  It is a pain in the A**E, I don't answer them as they come though as an UNAVAILABLE number.

The preference service just stops marketing companies from using your no. it will not stop joe bloggs from making nuisance calls.

Its funny that you saying men in suits.  Jake s terrible when it comes to those people, he always invites them in and gets them to talk,  it can annoying or embarrassing he does like to go off on one.

By the time they leave they can't wait to get out.

As Budgie said you can send text messages nowadays to landlines, try sending one to yourself then you will know what it sounds like (so you don't miss messages from friends say).

If it doesn't sound like the one you had before then it probably was a scam.
