200tdi Lumpy tickover.

My Disco 200tdi has developed a lumpy (erratic) tickover and it hunts with something like about 300 revs up and down.

Any ideas?

Clean your filters and pipes out.. check for water.
Have a good look around for leaks in the pipes
See if the lift pump is OK

Might be early signs of an injector pump problem.

That's what is worrying me.

The air filter was bit clogged with Welsh undegrowth, bits of branches etc. I even managed to find a broken bit off the end of the snorkel in there :)

There doesn't seem to be any leaks on the air in side of things. Like a pr@ I stuck my hand over the air filter and it managed to suck my hand onto it and stalled the engine (not to be recommended it hurts  :oops: ) I cupped my hand and tried to choke the engine and couldn't get it to raise the revs even when it was severely restricted.

I'll dig around the lift pup etc in the morning when it's a bit lighter.

UNfortunately not, was doing a recce, and following them, his motor slowed and black smoked at the back, then saw the hand come away from the snorkel :twisted:

Does anyone know what the small vacuum pipe is doing on the 200tdi. It tees off the main vacuum pipe to the brake servo. It goes across the engine bay and down behind the washer bottle where it dissappears through the bulkhead.

I'm still checking for leaks on the system causing the erratic idle.

I'm hoping it isn't an internal spring in the fuel injector pump.

If it is I'm hoping it's still on the shaft and not floating about.
Does anyone have an exploded view of the injector pump?

lift the boot floor carpets, avert your eyes from the impending rot, then remove the inspection cover for the fuel tank sender.

this happened on mine, have a good clean round and you'll see the pipes will be corroded, to diagnose an air leak, simply smear the corroded portions of the pipes with silicone sealant. mines been running with this temp fix for about 12 months now, i really should get it fixed.

Im not sure if the Clutch has a vacum assister. Other may be able to verify this. (Just a thought) :D

Sorry no idea but I'm just jumping on the 200TDi engine thread...

Mine idles fast.. at about 1100rpm,
I have checked the throttle cable and the like have fitted new fuel filter.

Engine runs well, drives fine, not too much smoke compared to other disco's.. it just idles fast.....

any ideas please???

is this a sign that that its been "tweaked" for more go ?

That's my job for the weekend all being well.

I intend to bypass the lift pump, sedimenter bowl and fuel filter with a gravity fed tank while I test to see if it cures the problem.

If it does then I'm well away on the road to saving a fortune instead of having to go down the fuel injector pump.

The pipe.
I'm confident it doesn't go to anything to do with the the clutch. The only thing I can think is there might be something that uses it near the bank of relays under the passenger kick panel.
I can't think what would want a vacuum pipe though.

The faster tickover.
Really guessing.

Is it possible the plastic "grommit" has broken up and it holding the throttle cable back further than it should and has raised the tickover?

The vacuum pipe goes off to an actuator for part of the cabin heater, something to do with the recirc/fresh setting.

I have had the cable loose as possible like slapping about.. no difference !

so far no one who has looked at it has any ideas other than the cable..

It ended up that Snorkly had to have new springs fitted in the diesel injection pump.
It ended up costing me £185 after they checked out for leaks then stripped the pump down.
Both springs had broken. I'll post pics when I get around to sorting them out.
