What a transformation!

I'm gobsmacked :shock:

I finally got round to removing the EGR and blanking the holes today. Took it for a quick test drive and thought I'd driven off in someone elses car :shock:  :?

Previously, it would not be happy pulling away without a reasonable amount of revs - now it will pretty much pull away from tickover.

Previously, it would struggle to maintain 30mph in 4th unless the road was flat or down hill - now it will happily drive along at 20mph in 4th ... and accelerate.

It runs SO much better now, it's quite amazing and a bit hard to believe :?  Does it sound like there was actually something wrong the the EGR all along?

It hasn't done much to the top end (it has helped though) but it gets there so much quicker!

do you think it made that much difference then? i will have to have a look tomorrow as i have some work coming up on my 300tdi so i was looking at doing that mod then

It has definitely made that much difference, but whether I was starting from a fully working system I wouldn't like to say :wink:

Phil - I just got one blanking plate (ERR4698) with the intention of putting it between the EGR value and the manifold. In the end, I completely removed the EGR valve and pipe. I used the blanking plate at the manifold end (no gasket!?) and made up a temporary blanking plate for the intercooler pipe out of an old beer can :)  Took me about 30 minutes :D

The old classic fix, I bet it last longer than the pukka one aswell  :D

Gordon, thanks for the details, I think I'll buy myself a couple of those blanking plates, get rid of the valve and see if I get the same improvement!

ive just blanked my egr valve with a piece of tin cut from a marmalade jar top :lol:

i also removed the electronic plug and crimped the vac hose

the results are amazing, it seems no more turbo lag, loads of bottom end pulling power, which is just where i like it 8)

i'm going to order the proper blanking plates and top intercooler hose, actually im going to replace all the intercooler hoses cos there all a bit soft, and there not expensive :wink:

so result all round

Where did ou buy the blanking plate from Gords?  I've found a couple of online shops with them but when you add shipping to them it makes no sense.  Paddocks didn't have any last time I was up there.

Well, I suppose, not everyone has had their Discoverys for ages and/or seen "all the write ups" in the past :wink:  Personally, I think it's good that these things get repeated :)

Absolutely.  I only recently found out about the modification and how to do it.  I'm off down to the local Land Rover dealer this afternoon to get two blanking plates.

I know it's a relatively simple procedure but perhaps the next person to do this mod should photograph it and write a step-by-step guide for the workshop section.  Personally, I'm still undecided whether to just blank off the valve between it and the manifold, or to remove the assembly completely.  No real benefit to the latter as I see it, only a little more space in the engine bay.

Just to be sure everone knows how simple this is, here is a 30 second guide:

1) if not removing EGR block off the pipe to the EGR - either crimp or 'bung' something in to stop airflow
2) fit a blanking plate either purchased or home made to either end of the EGR pipes

EVEN BETTER

3) remove EGR and throw in nearest bin (for weight saving)

4) have a good thrash and enjoy!

Total cost about £6 and about 10-30 minutes (10 minutes for a mechanic 30 minutes for anybody like me who doiesn't know one end of a spanner from the other!)

Hi, Shirleys Disco is a bit slow, I know it's a auto, would love some more uummph when towing, plus it only seems to do 22 mpg....

Should it do more than this???
How do I know if the EGR is working?
Why does this thing make so much differance?
Should I really take it off?

If you remove it you save a tiny bit of weight and gain a little space in your engine bay....

BUT

If you don't blank off both ends then either your Turbo is blowing like crazy to fill a useless void, or your exhaust gases are loosing pressure by filling a useless void, which would lower the effect they have on your turbo (depending on which end you block off).

When it is open, exhaust gases pass through it back into the inlet manifold.

1) Exhaust gases passing back do not contribute towards your turbo spinning up.
2) Engines run better on cold air, not hot air out of the engine
3) Engines burn the oxygen in the air, recycled air from the exhaust has little or no oxygen.

There are probably more reasons but this should be enough.

Well they didn't have any blanking plates in stock so I have to wait until Thursday.  I'll probably fit them on the weekend once I get my new steering guard fitted.  If I get the chance I'll photograph the process for the workshop section  :roll:

i see most have 300 tdi! is this the same case with the 200's

Hopefully getting one today and seems like a very worthy quick mod :)
