LPG MPG?

The price per litre for LPG is a lot lower than diesel or Petrol.

But, what sort of MPG do you get from LPG?

If LPG uses 2 litres to go the same distance as 1 litre of diesel then the saving would be marginal.

Personally I have a Discovery 300TDI, would performance suffer?

My V8 Discovery on LPG does the equiv of 25MPG Petrol.

Around town 11/12 MPG, motorway nearer 14 MPG

DUCK covers 340 miles to 122 litres of LPG.that means that it costs me £45.02 , to cover the same distance in diesel would cost me £70 ,the figures speak for themselves,they're not super impressive but ithink they're good

Performance would indeed suffer on your 300Tdi, as LPG is designed as a replacement for petrol, not diesel.  You can run diesels partly on LPG to improve combustion, but it's not really a way to save money.

If you get a decent conversion, you will get similar mileage out of a litre of lpg as you will from unleaded.  The sequential system I had on my P38 was pretty good.  More basic systems will lose you about 10% of your economy.

LPG has a lower calorific value than unleaded, so you loose some power.  Fortunatley it has an octane rating of 115 or better so you can re-tune your engine to improve efficiency.  Bad news is that means it won't run on unleaded.

As a compramise I use an ignition advance module and it gives me most of the power back.  At the moment LPG has just soared to 32.9p/l so it costs me a little over 10p/mile   I guess I'm getting well over 3 miles/l and the gas system is a crappy one (soon to be for sale ).

As a comparison my Micra does 470 miles on £40.50 worth of diesel and carries the ignominy of being a b****y Micra.  The Capri auto is doing 230 miles on about £40 :shock: and the Fiesta somewhere between those 2.

Now that LPG is ONE THIRD the price of Diesel it must surely be worth considering the investment of a conversion.  LPG is a catalist in Diesels that promotes more complete combustion of the fuel, so lowering emisions, oh and getting more power for your pound!  I don't know the exact figures but it is going to save your fuel bills, question is "by how much?"

Diesel engines can be converted to run partly on LPG, partly on diesel. This method uses the combustion of the diesel to ignite the LPG. The benefits include large increases in power and reduction in emissions, particularly the black smoke often associated with diesels.
Typically a ratio of 30% LPG to 70% diesel is possible. No adjustments are required to the diesel injection system and fuel savings come from the fact that throttle openings are lower due to the greatly increased power, which basically means you do not have to press the accelerator as hard to get the same performance.
Fuel savings upwards of 30% are possible with the increased power levels seen as a major benefit to users.

And don't forget....  you need to pay duty on the LPG if you are mixing it with Diesel on a road-going vehicle.

I was chatting to Andy @ Allisport about it over the weekend, and he has been discussing it with the man who makes the laws in Whitehall and they are well aware of people running conversions.. so beware !
