Hi, I am after some advice if poss.

I removed my towbar a while ago and bolted the ball to my crossmember and never thought owt of it but now i'm thinking maybe under heavy load it wouldn't be up to the job???  Its the only rear recovery point I have.

I have as paul has suggsted some original jate rings

plus I have a dixonbate towbar/jaw mounted in 6 bolt locations so that it gets pulled on evenly spreading the load across all of the mounting points - 4 on the xmember and two down to the chassis

There's also an original LR part that is simply a loop, it's on the same 'centres' as a 50mm ball & uses the same M16 nuts

Frank Elson (he of 'PKV 110 Station Wagon, ex-'LRO' & now, 'LRM' journalistic endeavours) claims in writing to have towed a Bedford TK with it.

It needs to be backed with a spreader plate.

If I remember correctly the one I have cost me less than £10.00 with the plate.
Will try & find the part numbers if needed.
Genuine part JATE rings are available over the counter as well (RRC 3237 ??)

IMHO, a towball on the crossmember is fine provided that :

a) it is attached with high tensile bolts
b) it has a decent spreader plate behind it
c) the crossmember is in good order


The towball should be up to a 3.5 tonne load, as should the cross member

Recovery Hoop - Part no: NRC5396

Spacer/spreader - Part no: 562756

Bolts - Part no: NH116041L (need 4 of)

Washer - Part no: 4233 (need 2 of)


Have got a feeling the spacer bracket is more than the hoop itself!!!

The problem with a tow ball, is that a rope has the ability of slipping of at angles. If you fit a loop and a shackle, it cant really come off.

I think i'll go for the spreader plate and new bolts for the towball.  That loop looks a bit mickey muse to be honest.

Instead of a 50mm ball, why not use a towing jaw? The rope can't come off.
Big (thick) ropes can on a ball

If your worried about strength, just put a spreader plate on the rear of the cross member

have you seen the one that bradley do that has a ball on top & underneath is the ring bit BUT you pull i pin .lever on the side & the ring centre drops down allowing you to push the trailer into the hitch & hook up at the same time??


my dads got one on his 110 for towing the towbouy n its a great wee thing,measn can hook up single handedly

Thats the one, except mines LR not dixonbate.  The rest of the bar is now surplus to requirements if anyone wants it.
