i am seriously considering replacing the standard shocks on my Disco200tdi.
i have a 2" lift and it has the extended top shock mounts already fitted.

i am thinking of fitting +2" shocks with the extended mounts (already fitted) and maybe dislocation cones. So the questions are:
would this be o.k?
what shocks can you recommend alomg with approx cost,and a good supplier.

any other polite comments welcome and thanks

Go for Old Man Emu ones, cost a bit more but a lot better. It should be ok just get the longer ones.
LC 80 series 1993. 285/75/16s Cooper STTs, OME 850s on the front with 25mm packer, 868s on the rear. 4.88 diffs. Winch bumper with 12000lb winch. Factory lockers. HD rear bumper with wheel carrier and winch mount.

go for procomp es9000's from explorer uk,lifetime garantee for the time you own the motor & only £35 a corner starting price,got them on my road 90,racer 90 7 my dad has them on his 110

Just a though but: If you've got the 2" drop on the top mount and you plan to fit +2" shocks, will they not "top out" (fully compress the shocker) on full articulation when the uppermost wheel goes into the arch?  :?

Sure, you'll end up with 4 inches more drop than standard but 2 inches less raise. As the pivot point is in the middle (nearly) of the axle then I would have thought that the amount of drop on one side would be equal to the amount of raise on the other?

Anyone know if I'm talking cr@p or not?   :wink:

Oh, and I'm with Mikee for the shocks, Pro Comp ES9000's, got 6 on the Disco (twin rears!! :D ).

As I have read it you have extented top shock mounts. The OME longer ones are a lot longer so the truets have to be taller. If you have shorter mounts on the front then standard length shocks. As for the back longer of shock lower mounts, you will need bigger/longer bump stops.

I was told by Gwyn Lewis that you need more up travel on the front and more downward on the back.

Hi Neil
My advice is be careful! if you already have lowered top damper mounts on the back and you fit 2" longer dampers then you will need dislocation cones, you MUST also fit a longer flexable brake pipe from body to axle otherwise if you bounce the vehicle up in the air at the back the axle will drop down too far and if you are luck it will rip the mounting off the body (more likely it will snap the brake pipe).
Going the other direction the dampers will bottom out before the axle hits the bump stops and burst the dampers, the warranty will also be out the window if the suppliers find out, you therefore MUST fit extended bump stops.
As far as I can see you will not gain a great deal unless you intend to increase the lift to 4" and then we start on the front :roll:
Hope you like spending money :wink:
As for type, you pays your money and you makes your choice, for what it is worth I have 2"longer ES9000 on mine with standard mounts.

you are absolutly right budgie

neil if you lift the suspension 2 inches your shocks will be too short

now you have counteracted this by fitting minus 2 inch shock mounts

if you put longer shocks on the one wheel will travel down and your opposite shock can top out

if you want to put plus 2 shocks on then you may consider lifting your suspension another inch

on my front i have a four inch lift with lowered top mounts and plus 2 shocks(correct setup)

and on the back i have four inch lift with lowered top mounts and plus 4 shocks....(not the correct setup )and i only just miss the rear shocks topping out by about an inch

so you guessed it im going up another inch on the rear



i reccomend procomp es 9000

yes you will

yes the front steering geometry will change for the worst

Can I just add my twopenneth?

Firstly though I like DeCarbon, I like ProComp more!

Now, if you have +2" springs AND spacers you risk either the damper OR the spring acting as bump-stop, both scenarios are BAD.

If you lift the car then fit bigger bump stops, what have you actually acheived?

And can someone clarify, are +2" shocks 2" in the body and the piston (making 4" extra droop) or +2" overall?

If you lower the standard mounts on standards shocks do they bottom out or do you hit the bump stops? meant to check whilst I had the springs off but forgot.

Then you get into longer brakes lines, steering castor and Cardan joints..........

Why not buy +4" shocks and return to your standard shock mounts + extended bump stops ?

Your shocks will not bottom out before hitting the bump stop
+
You'll get shock travel for your 2" lift
+
You'll get an extra 2" of axle droop

my thinking now is to fit spacers on the springs (+1") and fit the +2" shocks along with extended brake hoses and dislocation cones.and just hope the steering isn't too bad :wink:

You will not need cones for the front Neil as the dampers go up the middle of the spring and therefore the springs cannot dislocate.
As for spacers I know where there is a set of 1" spacers front and rear that are not in use at the moment but I don't think they are for sale.
If you pm me I may be able to arrange a look and check for size etc.

I am running + 2 inch with procomp shocks , snaped a top mount on shock on rear ( playing a bit rough with it ) rang the dealer up and they sent me a new one out , have since fitted an extra 2" under the rear end to bring it leval had no probs with the set up . :lol:
