being a noob when it comes to this gizmo

within itunes it allows you to convert to 128kbps AAC to save space on the ipod

is this bitrate quality ok or will i notice much difference with headphones?

I use 128k in my shuffle, and on most tracks (80%+) you hardly tell the difference.

Some types of music suffer more than others I have found, so it may be worth converting a handful of your favorite tracks to 128, and trying it.  Everybody is different.

I acquire as aac (mp4) and was told its a better cleaner form of compression. No complaints here.

I use both (MP3 and MP4) in my ipod and can't tell which is which unless I'm on the computer and can see the file. The files are definately smaller but I haven't got round to changing my MP3's to MP4's yet as I still haven't run out of space (mines a 60Gb).

If you have the space on your computer you could keep the original track as am MP3 and then convert them to MP4 for use wth your shuffle, if you don't like it, you can go back to the original tracks.
