I have a huge mouse under the bonnet
« on: November 02, 2005, 00:35:44 »
After a bit of water crossing my serpentine belt squeaks like mad, if you pour water on it the squeak disappeares for a few mins, but soon returns. Any ideas what I can put on the belt to stop it, the belt is not slipping by the way...........

Phill,

A couple of reasons for this:
1. The belt has become polished on the flat side and is rubbing on one of the pulleys.
2. There's dirt in the V-grooves of the belt or the pulleys that's causing it.
3. The tensioner pulley is out of alignment and causing the belt to be rubbed across the surface of the water pump pulley.

Cures:
1. Replace belt.
2. Remove belt and clean belt & pulleys.
3. With engine running, look down the line of the belt from the where the air-con pump is/would be and look for any misalignment. If you see it then you need a 1-2mm shim between the tensioner body and the block to pull it back in line.

Best of luck.  :D

Worth double checking that you have it routed correctly.  It is very easy to get this wrong on a V8 - don't know about Mpi or anything else.

I found that I ran for most of an event with it on the wrong way round - and whilst it worked fairly well it was more prone to slipping.

Ooops
Just realised you've got an MPi, not sure what belts they have.
Is it the old style V-belt on it or the flatter serpentine belt with 6 or 7 V-grooves on one side and flat on the other?

The stuff I gave you above is for the serpentine belts.   :?

A bar of soap held against the belt with the engine running cured it totaly, plus under the bonnet smells like pot pourri, two for the price of one.....
