water cooled intercoolers

anyone running anythink like a water cooled intercooler was thinking of making a kit up from some tubing and a pump from a water bottle washer pump and could probably get a temp sensor from rs to indicate when to spray front of intercooler with cold water or maybe run some nitros through it and freeze the intercooler  :D  am i going mad  :roll:  :roll:  :roll:

No not mad.....  :wink:

These are both tried and tested methods of making cars quicker, so why shouldn't they work with 4x4's.

arightpest has fitted a fan onto the back of his intercooler (he has a 200Tdi Discovery) and he is convinced that improved his performance.

Pajero's have a fan on the intercooler as standard.....

Nos, Pffft way to expensive


all you need & i gurantee this does the same job for a fraction of the price,doesnt look as cool but it works is a Co2 fire extinguisher  :wink: spray that on to freeeze the intercooler or make up some pipe work with a nozzle on the endo to spray the intercooler,if you watch any american street class drag racing watch the blown honda boys as they do that before a run,freeze the cooler & away you go

I thought about rigging up one some of these Peltier thermo electric cooler modules in the pipe out of the intercooler, a 70°C temp drop should have an effect!

Peltier thermo electric cooler modules
Thermoelectric coolers (TECs) are solid state heat pumps that utilise the Peltier effect. Their operation involves applying a DC current to the TEC causing heat to be transferred from one side of the TEC to the other, creating a cold and hot side.
A single-stage TEC can achieve temperature differences up to 70°C, and can transfer heat at high rates of power (W). Four different cooling capacities are available in the range.

I have fitted a fan but I only run it when off roading because the effect of forward motion is normally enough to help keep things cold. But the fan makes up for the lack of forward motion when running slow. I have also had a play with the turbo but not to much I fitted an electric fan plus a k&n and had a little play with the fuelling plus an mr2 intercooler that is capable of running up to 300 horse power I know this because the mr2 it came off was running at that power output but he fitted a charge cooler because a larger intercooler wouldn’t fit at the rear of the car so the charge cooler was the way to go.

All these changes have made it far more flexible to drive I can now drive at 40 mph on the flat in 5th and pull cleanly away plus when towing there is far more grunt.

The Pajero's have a fan on the intercooler as standard..... Yes they do and that’s were mine came from the only difference is that I have to switch mine on and it sits in front of my rad  and there’s is thermostatically controlled because the inter cooler sits directly above the engine and needs all the help it can get. Any body doing a mod on them moves it infront of the rad to get that nice cold air.

2 problems with that:

1) These things aren't that powerful - the temp drop sounds good but 148W of cooling isn't going to make much difference.

2) Conservation of energy - you're going to need to put more energy into the thing from the alternator than you're going to get in benefit from the cooling!  So in other words it won't work.

The gas-related ideas will work because the cooling power is inherent within the gas as it's contained.  If you had to run a compressor to compress the gas, then sprayed it on the intercooler, again you'd have to put more energy in from the engine to compress the gas than you'd get in benefit from the temperature drop.

I cant measure the temp gain, but my Isuzu TDI motor runs noticeably cooler when the intercooler fan is switched on. It immediately drops 2-3 degrees on the water temp gauge when I kick the fan in.
Go on....cut me in half........it says SUZUKI all the way thru the middle!!

One thing to be careful of is not overcooling, you don't want to end up getting consensation in your charge air.

think you will find that most of the top notch rally teams use a system called aqaumist technology in which there is a fine mist sprayed into the engine which helps the effect of pinking when the engine is under preasure ect..which helps increase the ignition timming which in turn helps with touqe i was speaking to a company yesterday about water cooling injection systems and they make kits up some work on ecu and others work from boost preasure which you set when to spray and they also do a kit for water cooling the intercooler which can also be set on boost preasure or a computer ecu controlled unit as being water it sounds daft but its only a fine mist no more than the fine fog you get early in the mornings but enough to cool air charging to make a differnce in touqe and power its all good news for petrol  but not to sure on the diesel side im researching this subject now will keep posted regards colin

Yep, did that...........................

got an old washer jet pump and ran pipe from washer reservoir to pump and then to a jet which sprayed the intercooler. If you get in contact with a subaru dealer or a "max power" type outlet they will get you a jet for the end of the tube which subaru imprezas use, it gives a fine mist over a wide area rather than a jet of water. The whole thing cost me about £12 to do and oyou could tell the difference on hot days esp. and also if you needed a bit more umph to get up a hill just "push da buddon" and thus more power.
I did this on a 110 with the old td engine which I had an allisport full width intercooler fitted. The intercooler lade a difference and the mist spray gave it a bit more again.

There's a world of difference between spark ignition engines and compression ignition, firstly that 'pinking' is how a Diesel engine works, so reducing it is a bad idea.  I can see how using CO2 would help, perhaps a little too much, but why not just fit a bigger intercooler, more surface are and less restriction in one go.  And if you're going to carry compressed gas around, why not add and LPG kit?
