Disabled man gets fake parking ticket Nov 1 2005
« on: November 06, 2005, 00:55:51 »
From icBerkshire 01.11.05

THE WIFE of a disabled Priestwood man targeted by anti-4x4 protesters has slammed the anonymous person who put a fake parking ticket on her husband's car.

Terrance Eglington, 56, has one-and-a-half discs missing from his back after an accident as a mechanic 27 years ago when he was pushing a truck.

He drives the 4x4 because it is easier for him to get into, so he was stunned when he turned on his windscreen wipers last Monday morning and saw the ticket flapping about.

The ticket was in a waterproof fixed penalty notice bag from the London borough of Hillingdon, but the ticket itself was not linked to the area's council.

The spoof tickets, which highlight the environmental problems posed by uneconomical 4x4s, are available on anti-4x4 websites.

But it enraged Darlene Eglington, 59, because she says her husband has a need for a larger car.

Mrs Eglington said: "These people don't know my husband from Adam because they clearly don't know why he has a 4x4. It is not for doing the school run, it is for his back.

"I was just so angry when I saw it. The people who left it didn't even have the guts to leave a number on the ticket for us to respond to them. I would love to know who it was."

Bracknell Forest Borough Council's environment leader

Cllr Terry Mills said people had a right to both own the car they want and to disagree with other people's choice in cars.

However, he said opinions should be expressed without causing harassment to others.

He said if people chose to drive an uneconomical car that was their choice, and said the borough council would only get involved if road users were not behaving responsibly in their cars.

The peaceful protest group Alliance Against Urban 4x4s was unavailable for comment.

IMHO, it's a disgrace anyway.  What difference does it make that the guy is disabled ?

Small-minded, bigoted fools who believe they have the right to tell people what they are "allowed" to drive.

The anit urban 4x4 alliance is NEVER available for comment.  They have never ever responded to any of my emails. I am sure it's because they have absolutely no idea of what they are talking about and are scared to engage in an intelligent debate.  These guys are even more cowardly than Greenpeace, who at least had the decency to reply, even though they decided to ignore everythin I said.

Having fun with a supermarket local to me at the mo, my father is wheelchair bound, and they cant even supply the special trolleys to attach to the chair, seems they have been all nicked, 3 weeks ago I went down the bottom of the car park and hauled one of them out of the small river there.
They never secure them up, come this week, the store manager is in for a shock, I'm inviting him to walk around with a trolley for my father's shopping

You know, I was just thinking that very same thing.
And,
How come they're not bothered about the envoironment when it comes to chopping down trees to make dumb ass parking tickets?

There a bunch of muppets, they want Micra owners to pay about £400 road tax, £800 if it's a mondeo. So where do there minibuses and vans come into the argument?

Nice to see the leaflets have the fuel figures for petrol V8/V6 4x4's and compact cars with small engines as a refence.

Just reading the tickets and this thread.

The information on the ticket is taken from tables produced by the crown copy write. In the terms for reproduction of this data it states that it cannot be used in a unfair or misrepresenting way.  So they should use cars that have the same number of seats and luggage capacity for the comparison.

So I presume that they mean the New (as yet not designed or considered) 4x4 SMART people carrier with 5 seats and enough room to move a freezer.

Just a question

Will they not claim a high popularity from the number of tickets they send out?

ie, we are so right! afterall we have had requests for 100,000 fake tickets!  So it must be what the people want!

A better idea is to send them back to them defaced, that way they will have to re-think the distribution of them

If you've seen the tickets they are printed on high quality glossy paper so they are NOT enviromentaly friendly
The type of print/paper they use makes them had to recycle.
Also most people who get them are probably just going to drop them in the street adding to litter so they are themselves promoting polution.

well had a reply from greenpeace to my mail
Quote
Thanks for your e-mail.  Whilst Greenpeace volunteers aren’t responsible for the particular incident reported below we are campaigning against 4x4s because of their fuel inefficiency and impact on climate change.
We have no objection to people driving 4x4s if they have a genuine need e.g. farmers and others who work offroad.  We have asked our volunteers to avoid placing our leaflets on the windscreens of cars displaying a disabled sticker (n.b. the article does not state whether Mr Eglington’s vehicle had a disabled badge on view at the time) because we have, as yet, not researched the vehicle market specifically for disabled users and so cannot currently recommend alternative, fuel efficient, vehicles that have easy access.

There’s more information on our 4x4 campaign at www.choosecleanenergy.com

Best wishes,
Lisa Weatherley

Has anyone read their "guidelines for ticketing"?

Have a look at the part titled "Stick to the big models".

If they follow that, the most of us should never get a ticket (proof of off-road use).  I'll bet that doesn't stop them though!

What gets me is a 4x4 is no more gas guzzeling than a subaru impretza or a siera cosworth or a renault 19 16v. ECT ECT but you don't see them getting a sticker. Or the boy racers which drive about all night spending fuel like its going out of fashon.

If greenpeace manage to convince the government to increase road tax on my disco then I will have to save the money from elsewhere in my budget.  The easiest for me would be to stop buying 100% renewable electricity from GoodEnergy and switch to a cheaper fossil-burning supplier.  I would also have to stop investing in forestry to pay for the increased tax.  Since my household energy consumption produces 3 times more CO2 in a year than my car..the environment loses out big time. Do these people not see the bigger picture?

from the above mail I asked greenpeace about "4X4 off road competitions" and got this rather curt and wonderfully vauge reply

Hello Lisa

Many thanks for your response to my mail.

I've read your reply and would just like to ask one further question.

What is greenpeaces current view on people such as myself who use there 4x4's for off road competition?

I belong to 2 offroad compotition clubs and regularly take part in 4x4 events around the north eastern area.
These are well structured organised events not just blasting around the countryside tearing up the enviroment.
we only use sights with full permisson from landowners and there can be as many as 25 vechicles taking part on a monthly basis.
Many competitors have had LPG systems fitted to reduce the running costs and decrease enviromental impact.
I look forward to hearing your organisations views

was the question I asked and got this back

quote
We don’t take a view on issues we don’t campaign on. Our campaign is about road transport and fuel consumption at present. Off road competitions or other types of motor sport do not fall under this.
But of course we all need to reduce our CO2 emissions for the sake of the climate.
end quote

well thats certainly clears up that issue.
As long as we only have 4x4's to take part in compotition's and use as utility vechicles and dont drive them in towns etc we all can all get along fine.
So guess we all need to drive 2CV's to tow our modified disco's,90's,jimnny's,jeep's etc to events
