loud bang
« on: November 06, 2005, 17:51:25 »
Hello

I was wondering if some one can help?
a friend has a D reg 110, and they have just had a bang/crunch and loss of drive to their vehicle. It can be driven, but only with diff lock engaged.

Can anyone explain what as gone wrong??

Thankyou

Take the diff lock out and see which propshaft turns when you try to drive it.  Do this gently, and don't drive the vehicle around until you fix it !

Whichever one it is will be attached to the axle that has failed.

If it is the rear, could be a diff but more likely a halfshaft
If it is the front, could be a diff, or halfshaft, but more likely a CV joint.

Worst case, it could be the centre diff, but that is less likely than the axles.

its either a cv joint, half shaft or front diff & as its a 110 i will put £10 on it NOT being the back axle,

if its a cv joint it "could" lock up when going down the road causing loss of control & a brown trouser moment,
if its a diff it will make itself known as it will start to punch brocken bits from inside the axle casing outward,& if its a shaft, well you need to strip the hub of to check the cv joint & you can pull a shaft out while your there,
although if it went bang i rekon shaft or cv joint, diffs normally PING

I have just had another word with the owner, and he says there is a cluncking noise when you turn left, also when you get under the vehicle the fronf shaft,  you can keep turning it, occassionally it feels like it catches something, but then you can keep turning by hand?

Is that anymore useful??

Thanks
