Hi Guys

I've bought myself a Series 2A 109 out in OZ.

It has a Holden 2.8L Straight 6 engine in it.

It also has a PTO winch fitted.

I want to be able to use the power of the engine properly as I plan to do quite a lot of touring out there.  :D

Basically, what I want to know is whether I can fit an Overdrive aswell as the PTO winch?

Is there a plate on the back of the od unit? Is the first question.

Been thinking about that recently with the winch I have here, fitting it onto the 88 with overdrive, but need to get under and have a look myself

how much serious off-roading ar you going to be doing  :roll: . if only the odd bit go for rangie diffs, that sort of engine shouldn't strugle with the higher gearing off-road any way.

My 109 has a solsbury rear axel so 90 diffs wont fit in that.

What rear axel does the 1969 Series 2A have (Salisbury or other)?

Can you put Rangie diffs into whatever they are?

I'm probably not going to be doing that much off-roading.  

On road mostly I think, but with the capability for 4WD (many Aussie roads aren't that good)!

I personaly dont know but there will be someone on here. If you have a digi cam get a photo of ya rear axel. Make sure the camera is on the lowest resolution makes the pics smaller for the net. If its still to big to post and ya dont know how to compress it you can send it me and I will do it for ya. I have put 90 diffs in my 88 series 3 diesel and its tops it used to do 65mph revving its t*ts off now it will do 85mph after about 3 days but it will do 70mph not a problem without revving like mad.

I can't take any photos of it, or have a look as the Land Rover is in Australia and I'm still over here.

as its a 109 it "will" have a salsbury on the back unless it has been messed with,
this will have a 4.71 ratio which is lower than the 90 ratio of 3.54

to make it easyer for cruising it sugest fitting bigger tyres as its lots of work to alter the rear axle ratio

Dont bother with the Overdrive the Fairy unit is a pain in the bum, it will fail at where the splines engage on the dog of the output shaft on the main gearbox. I am in Australia and I assume the unit you have purchased has a 186 cubic inch holden motor. The Fairy unit in Australia may be fine for 88 inch Land Rovers but forget it with a hard used 109. I guess it depends upon where you are going to live in Australia but where I live (in Alice Springs in the middle) a 109 without modified diff ratios is quite frustrating (CAN YOU IMAGINE TRAVELLING 1580 KM TO THE NEAREST CIVILISED PLACE AT 80 KMH) the holden motor will pull very well  but will rev its butt off to do 100 kmh the end result is a car that is very expensive to run. It will pull 3.54 Range Rover diffs and if its a 2a I would be suprised if it had a Sailsbury so the conversion will not be expensive. (I recently bought a Range Rover 3.54 :1 on ebay for only $75 aud a Salisbury 3.54:1 will cost $600 aud) If you live in the eastern part of Australia distances are not great but if you live in the centre or the west you need to change the vehicle to cruise at at least 100-110 kmh.
I personally drive a Stage 1 because of where I live I presume you are going to live in the eastern states all I would suggest you do is get here put up with the 80-90 kmh speed of the series 2a and show the people of Australia that Toyotas Suck off road when compared to a real 4x4.

The Land Rover I have bought is this one

I'm going to Holbrook in New South Wales initially, but plan to travel around, so a bit more top speed without revving it to death would be a big help.

When get it, I'll have a look at the rear diff and if it's not a Salisbury, I'll probably upgrade them to Range Rover ones.

If it is a S2a that has not been hacked about it will have a landrover rear axle.  

The salsbury axles first apeared on S3.

As soon as you change your diff's for higher ratio diffs you increase the ratio of your low box and reduce off road ability, can i suggest that you change the high ratio gear in the transfer box instead or fit an overdrive.

Are you aware that you can get rover diffs in 4.7:1 and 3.9:1 and 4.2:1 as well as 3.5:1 . I have found the Range rover diffs ( 3.5:1 ) were too high and although they did increase the crusing speed they reduced the acceleration quite a bit . I have a Lwb SIIa with a 4.2 jaguar engine ( so power is not an issue ) and I have done what you are wish to do . As far as I know you can't fit both an overdrive and a PTO or winch .

Back to the original question, yes it is technically possible but not the way everybody is thinking. There was I'm fairly sure a PTO available that mounted under the transfer box, this would then allow an overdrive in the normal place. Having said that you probably stand more chance of finding rocking horse droppings.

I think all except late S2a's had Rover axles except some that had the ENV (?) units. Though it isn't hard to retrofit a salisbury, my '62 SIIa has one. as for Rover ratios, yes there is a 4.2 that comes from the P4 range of cars. I've not come across the 3.9.

Some IIas had the salisbury as it was a standard fit on 109 suffix H machines. The ENV was an optional rear axle, but not a common fitment.
You could use an overdrive with a bottom PTO to drive the winch...

Just looked at the vehicle you bought - it says 69 but front panel and wings would put it at about 1962/3, and would say a rover axle - if it *is* 1969 (with a retrofit front) it might have a salisbury back axle.

Boldy going where no one-ton has gone before...

Ref the Diffs, if it's got Sailsbury then you can fit the higher ratio 3.56 diffs from a stage 1 to it.

I have Stage one axles fitted to my IIa which was also Jag powered until very recently. I fitted the whole axle, just the rear spring pads needed relocating.

I don't know what the availability of stage 1 bits out in oz is so this may shoot the idea down... bit big for personal luggage!

Ref the winch can't you fit one like the capstain winches? where the pto is from the front pulley rather than the transfer box.
