To show my utter ignorance, anyone able to tell me how jate rings attatch, or better still got  a picture?
changing the bumper to a heavy duty tapered job and would like to fit some jates assuming they wont be fouled by the steering guard

as far as I know the jate rings attach through the chassis though the holes for the tie down straps.  Which, would mean that your steering guard is quite seriously going to be in the way :(

yes.... steering guard uses the same fixing location as jate rings. If you are replacing your bumper, why not get a new one with towing points. I replaced mine with a raised reinforced one, and it has point to fit towing thingies (i cant remeber what they are called  :? )

What about fitting a pair of miltary lifting rings as fitted to series military landrovers? I know the purists will squeal that they are designed to work with a lifting force not a dragging one , but they worked for the army (not the subtlest of driving schools), i ran a pair for 4 years with no problems, they are above the bumper line so you don't have to excavate the vehicle to get at them when stuck in your choice of ditch or bombhole and ...... i might just have a pair lying around. The downside is that you will need to cut out a tiny bit of the plastic grill.

My set-up.... until I stripped my 90" into a 100 bits
(not proper JATE rings... though they get called the same thing)

Steering guard is a Southdown jobbie....

Mantec guard with Jate ring fitted, had to cut a chunk out the guard to do so.

Also had to alter the spacer, cut in half then used washers either side to allow some movement.

Hope this helps. Although worth remebering to fit bridle before offroading as if you go bumper deep you will have to dig to get to them.

its actually the devon bumper we want, but got the lights on the a frame which happens to bridge over the bumper, and i think are likely to foul the access to the bumpers recovery eyes!
bumpers with fixed a frames dont suit as its got the long snout due to aircon!
have got a pair of swivel recovery eyes, but again dont think with the tapered bumper the will be enough room to attatch them. i did ask d44 for the measures, but have somehow lost the e-mail and too embarassed to ask again

oh yes.. and have got recovery points on the steering guard but not sure how strong these are, especially if recovery is not pulling from directly infront of the vechicle
