Had it with the 90
« on: December 13, 2005, 10:16:06 »
it has now come to the time that i have had it with my 90........ i have spent hours of time, and more money than i dare sum up keeping her going, replaced almost every part possible (well at least it feels that way) and now she has packed up again.....

i have been toying with getting her running OK and then replacing with a newer model, 300TDI, some time next year, but i think it is going to have to be sooner rather than later now.

i have this odd urge however to move over to a Toyota, possibly a Hilux Surf??

So if any of you Toyota owners want to convert, an up to now, Landy fan, can you let me know what these are like, reliability, ease of upgrades etc.

Still not fully turned, don't know if i can live without those nice square, aerodynamic curves of a Defender, but the way i feel at the moment, could be going that way

If you want to look at a Surf may I suggest looking at http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/index.php, but I would recommend you look at 3.0 not 2.4 models.

Whilst the Hilux Surf is a reasonable offroader and great all round family car- I would also recomend the 4.2D LC for more 'serious' offroading jaunts since it comes with the aforementioned array of difflocks fitted. At best with a Surf you'll only get LSD on the rear and centre difflock on post 1996 (MK3) models.

You can retro-fit various after market difflocks to the Surf- but then you'll be limited by the IFS suspension. The LC comes with solid front axle and all the possibilties that offers.

With both the Surf and LC all manner of modifications are possible (whilst this activity still remains legal in the UK- I hear it's in the pipeline to be outlawed!!!!) since our Japanes, Australian and American offroading brethren have been modifying these trucks for years.

Do a Google search on "4Runner" (what the Hilux Surf is marketed as in the US (and briefly in the UK)) and you'll see what I mean.

Surf spares are not usually a problem as there are several specialist parts suppliers (e.g. Millners)

http://www.milneroffroad.com/KZN130.htm (look here for some typical parts prices)

Toyota UK will support Grey Imports with parts- since the 4Runner was just a re-badged Hilux Surf- but if you buy one, as UDtrev say's it's safer to get a 3.0L diesel model.

Dont do it you'll just be wasting your money and kidding yourself.  My Uncle sold his old 90 and got a Cherokee, then moaned about it endlessly so he bought a Disco and now has finally dumped the Disco and got a TDI 90 which is what we all knew he wanted anyway

This is in 12 months, once ya had a 90 ya never want owt else.

He He.

Thats when he realised that LRs aren't that bad after all....

We do a lot of work for our local Chrysler dealer.  Their Service dept is quite adept at changing engines on the later diesels - they do 2 a month UNDER WARRANTY.

They've just sold a year-old Cherokee for the 3rd time.  It's had a new engine, new gearbox, new transfer box, new turbo and other faults (all seperate failures) - in total about £13000 of warranty repairs - it was only about £15500 in the first place

heh, now that sounds familiar, i have had a nights sleep and already turning back on my decision. My poorly 90 is sitting outside, looking all sorry for itself, sad and neglected, wanting me to get under her bonnet and caress her
