Best Engine transplant for a series 3.
« on: December 29, 2005, 20:25:11 »
OK just wanting to know a mixed opinion on what is the best engine to fit onto a series 3 gearbox for an upgrade. Not wanting silly power like V6 or V8 just turbo diesel LDV or any others which fit or can be made to fit without expence. Is it the LDV 400 or 200 or sherpa. People say that a peugeot diesel fit aswell. What info can you tell me please. Dont want the expence of a £200 conversion plate....cheers guys

I know ya cant afford a conversion plate but if ya can find one cheap it may be worth looking at the perkins prima out of a Montego the engines are well cheap and are supposed to do 30+mpg in a series and be fairly torquey.

If you look on here you will see this guy made his own conversion plate for the montego engine he fitted. Johnty has LDV 400 in the 2a and thinks it a good engine. Also this months LRO has a list of what engine will go in what if that's any help althought they say a 300tdi won't go into a series (Johnty says he may have to try just to prove them wrong   thats if he doesn't get round to doing a Td5!!!)

How about a landrover 2.5 turbo? A friend of mine has one in his iia marshalls ambulance, it does 65 with the overdrive, pulls great and goes straight on to the gearbox. I think all he had to do besides plumbing and electrics was one engine mounting.
If you are just wanting to put a simple diesel engine in you may as well fit a 2.25 diesel, they are fine in an 88 I think.
