Best way to stop the 90 being nicked?
« on: January 05, 2006, 01:54:26 »
I have been wondering how best to tackle this, seems Defenders are being nicked in huge numbers nationwide so what do you all do?

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted!

Mine is a TDI so fancy immobilizer is no real good are they? The Thief brings a battery or has a little time he'll will get around it won't he?

I have a battery isolater to fit, that will keep the Muppets off.

I don't want a stoplock as i have a steering ball on the wheel.

A clutch claw is no use as i have no clutch.

I don't want one of them huge yellow scaffolding poles cos i dont know where i would put it (No suggestions please  ).

It has a alarm which i am gono remove as i never arm it cos it goes off when it feels like it and nobody takes any notice of them anyway.

I thought i saw an ad for a removable steering wheel, anybody heard of this or did i dream it?

I have a Devil Duck tho and am thinking of adding another.

Same topic came up on another forum last year, hope it helps although it looks like nothing will stop the determined thief.

Hello jim-willy i have had one of the removable steering wheels on a car i had before my 90 and my mate has one on his 90 I think he got it from scorpion racing. In land rover international this month there is a full metal jacket on page 20 its like a box you put on the pedals web address xsogroup4x4@btinternet.com .  A battery isolater swich is ok but you can buy the keys for them from most places. :D

How about removing a 'vital' part of the fuel/ignition/starter system - I had a mate who used to remove the rotor arm whenever he left his car for a while. I know you don't have rotor arms in diesels, but something small, descrete and simple - like a fuse or relay, so even if the theiving scumbags bring a battery - it still wont start.

Immobiliser.... pointless on most (older) Diesels
2.5Na, 2.5Td, 200Tdi and 300Tdi can be started with a length of wire in the engine bay... two lengths of wire and you can start it.  (one length means you have to jump - i.e. push - start it!!)
No need for an extra battery, and takes seconds.

Battery Isolator... will slow somebody down, may even stop the opportunist.
The plastic type key is easily obtainable - can buy them in a pack of 10 if needed
A metal type switch is better (see pic), keys are harder to come by... however then can be bodged or by-passed, but they will slow somebody down.

Alarm... useful.... as long as somebody hears it and actually does something.

Removable steering wheel, available from a few places...
Two types... most of them require you to weld on a new splined section to your steering column, which is ok, but some people don't like them.
The other type is made by Raid (i think) why by the steering wheel boss is made in two parts - which means no mods to the column.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages.....

Just remember... you can steer a car with a set of mole grips if the wheel is missing.

Mechanical locks....
I've seen the box that covers all the pedals, is quite a smart ideal - will work even though you haven't got a clutch pedal.
May not stop somebody, but will at least slow them down... though the hope is they see it, and nick somebody else’s car instead.

Steering locks.... most of them you just cut the wheel with a hacksaw - and the lock comes off.

Other...
I'm sure I've seen a solenoid advertised somewhere that you put in your fuel line (hidden) which is activated by a separate switch... without clicking the switch the engine gets no fuel so won't start.

Wouldn't be hard to make one if I have dreamt it!!!

However... IMHO... if someone wants to nick your then they will, regardless of what security you've got on it.  But you can slow them down.

But if it won't start, or won't drive they'll tow it...

I had a friend who used a switch to cut off the fuel pump in his escort, he just split the feed wire and ran it to his foglamp switch (no fog lights).

But you have a mechanical fuel lift pump on pre Td5 Diesel Land Rovers (bar RoW spec 300Tdi's)....

Some people also say to put a switch in the feed to the fuel pump solenoid... but this is pointless... if someone wanted to pinch the Landy they would just run a seperate 12V feed to it.

Not totally pointless, anything that can be done to stop the opportunist thief is worth while.

Thought I have to agree that if someone really wants your car, whatever make/model, they will come prepared and there is very little that can be done to stop them - worst case would be a few ropes and a HIAB, or something similar, then they can get round any alarms, imobilisers, pedal boxes, switches etc at their leisure

are people really that desperate to steal land rovers?

had land rovers for a year or two now and never had any problems with people messing with them..... only kids letting down tyres! lil sods!

My TDi has a toad immobiliser and i thought that would be enough! Guess I will have to start locking the doors now....

What about ones of those things they use on caravans? Mule I think they're called. Basically a metal bar that goes through the floor and hard against the ground so you can't drive or tow it away. Lifting the vehicle is then the only way of moving it and if they're going to do that nothing will stop them short of chaining it to something anyway

The mere thought brings tears to the eyes.
Is it 'Toad' that offers the 'gas' system, where a bladder full of vegetable oil heats up & creates a smoke-screen???
Now, if that could be converted to release Mustard (or Cyanide) gas??????

Alternatively, are 'Trunk Monkeys' legal????(see 'video 4')

Big 'motorcycle' type chain and lock, fed thru a wheel slot and wrapped around a radius arm.
Renders the car immoveable, even if they get the wheel off its still chained to the car.

Its easy to coil up and stuff under the seat etc, and you can always concrete a hasp into the floor at home and chain it down.

Before anyone discusses the strength of chains etc, Im an ex biker, and Im well aware of a chains weaknesses. Believe me anything is cuttable, but check out the technology on bike security, Its bloody secure, (expensive yes) and will foil all but a thief going hard equipped to steal.
Go on....cut me in half........it says SUZUKI all the way thru the middle!!

What about this one then to stall the wouldbe thieves... it will only work on diesels tho

find the wire that goes to the stop-solenoid. This is probably easiest inside the vehicle.
Cut it and run it through a switch somewhere convenient yet not too obvious.

The simple 'immobiliser' when activated would not allow the user to start it, even if they knew how to bypass the steering switch...

It is totally non-standard, thereby leaving them scratching their heads trying to get into yours to work out what you've done.......

Easy, Cheap, and as good a delay as anything you could buy I reckon.

Comments.....
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

In theory....

But....

If I was to pinch a Na, Td, 200 or 300Tdi it wouldn't matter...

All I would do is open the door, break the steering lock with a bar through the wheel, then pop the bonnet and put a 12V to the fuel solenoid and touch a 12v feed to the starter solenoid... engine now running and driveable.

Looking around various salvage yards this seems quite a favortie method.

However....
The other option would be to screw a slide hammer into the igntion barrell, snap the barrell out... which will take the steering lock off and allow you to start the engine and drive away... in this case your method would work, but only long enough for the theif to realise what you've done.

So would possibly work, or possibly not depending on the thiefs methods.
