Rover 620 Running Very Hot

I not its not mud related but...

Berry (my Mrs) has a Rover 620Sli on a 'S' plate the one with the Honda engine.  It runs very hot, the needle is just underneath the red area of the gauge, and basically she has to drive with the heater on hot output and the blower going.

The cooling fans work and come on when the car is switched off as normal.

Im thinking of a termostat and temp gauge sender replacement, is there anything else I should be looking to replace ?

if its the honda engine and if you have a/c on it check the twin relay pack its a black plastic box it has 4 relays inside two for the a/c fan and two for the rad fan they have a habbit of filling with dirt and packing up. if its a "k" series sorry you have a split head gasket. check the temp of the hose going into the thermostat and check the temp of the hose coming out if there is a big differace its your thermostat and also the rad has small channels these can easyilly get bloked take the bottom hose off and let the water drain from it if there is a lot of gunk/dirt give the rad a blast out with a hose but here is the fun bit take the rad off and run the hose through it backwards as in the bottom of the rad so the water comes out of what would be the top. hope that makes sence. used to have a 827 sterling myself with the honda engine and the rad used to get lime scale in it all the time used to clean it out with limescale cleaner

Cheers its had a new rad about 12 months, will check those air-con relays tho.

Its got about 156k on the clock so I do expect the head gasket to be slightly suspect.

no worrys if i think of anything else i will let you know. iirc the relay pack on the 600 series is either under the drivers side headlight or on the back wall of the engine bay both are not a good position i put mine in a plastic bag to stop it from getting drity as mine did the same as yours and it was the relay pack and what i though was the fans working was just the a/c one not the cooling one.

Did you get it sorted out?

My rover 620i did 180,000 miles with no probs and would have gone on alot longer if I hadnet gone through a very deep flood that I thought was shallow.

It has now gone up to nearly 212000 miles with the rebuilt engine in.
