The letter appeared in pride of place, centre top of the letters page (p21), in last Thursdays' (5th January) 'Western Mail' - this is the broadsheet paper for much of Wales.
I quote :
"Costly off-roading.
Sir - How much more damage can we allow to be inflicted on our precious landscape in the Brecon Beacons National Park, and elsewhere in Wales, by off-road vehicles before the relevant authorities take notice - meaningful notice?
Recently a section of Sarn-Helen on Mynydd-Illtyd was being so-called repaired? Apparently Powys County Council had supplied the material to fill in the holes on Sarn-Helen. Was this at the expense of Powys rate payers?
Sarn-Helen and various other green lanes with their adjacent landscape are systematically being destroyed by fleets of off-road vehicles, mostly on weekends, as shown in my photograph (published above). Not satisfied with travelling along the lanes, they are now using the adjacent landscape as a playground for their mindless, and destructive pastime causing possibly irreperable damage. We hear much these days of sustainability. This activity is certainly not sustainable. Our members in Westminster, and within our Assembly in Wales need to urgently address this anti-social activity.
How much more material does Powys County Council need to input, and at who's cost? There is mile upon mile of destruction within the National Park alone. The majority of the public are not aware of this destruction. I wonder if it is "out of sight out of mind" with the relevant authorities. ARWEL MICHAEL Ystradgynlais, Powys"
