I bought the Feb issue of Land Rover Enthusiast today. Mainly because the front cover advertised an article comparing Discos I, II & III off-road.

What a let down! The Disco one was modified the Series 2 Disco was on road tyres and so could not compete and the three was not tested toughly because it was to expensive to risk damaging.

So not exactly a comparison then..:(

The only interesting info was about the lack of suitable mud tyres available for the Disco 3.

Rant over…:)

I had a go (as a passenger) in the D3 at billing . Well impressive. Did things that you cant do without all the gizmo's they have..like stopping on a short steep hill climb and casually setting of again!
Only prob i can see is that by the time i would buy one for use off road(or for anything- they arent cheap) all the electrical wizardry will be dead..and if not a few weeks in the mire and it will!

You can put Wrangler MT/R on a D3..  they work well enough.

i was lucky enough to take a D3 out laning ( as driver ) and i will say that all the electric gizmos to their job. on a wet slippery climb the D3 took it all in its stride. the disco 1 behind me was fully dressed in M/T had a few slips and slides and climbed to the top saftly but the D3 had road tyres fitted. its just clibed to the top without any effort. on a cross axle the D3 gizmos cut in and kept drive where it needed it to pull you through. while being very impressive i can see it being its downfall when the vehicle gets older and starts playing up.
i was very lucky to be able to have a proper play in a D3. lots of mud and water to play in. i threw what i could at it without damaging it and it came through with no fuss at all. i will say that the D3 could get you in to trouble easily though. as the gadgets are doing all the work for you. it sort of removes you from off roading.
just my opinion on it
cheers

There isn't much in the way of mud tyres available yet, I use Cooper STTs which do the job nicely, though as has been said D3s are blooming good on standard road tyres. It's true that the electrickery does a lot of the work for you but I find it allows you to concentrate more on where you're going next and getting the right line rather than working how to get through the bit you're currently on.
The biggest problem with the D3 is the weight, you can get bogged down in places a lighter vehicle would get out of fairly easily, there again with the gadgets you can wander up hills on tickover that others need a long run up and plenty or revs to get up.
I hope your worries about the electronics don't come true coz I intend on keeping mine for a long time yet!

some magazine comparisons are rubbish arent they - what happened to the good old days with proper head to heads of products and tables of results for us to ponder then a proper conclusion?

just look at those LRO product comparsions of late - they are useless ie snorkles, tyres, handwinches...etc etc.. they just arent helpful at all and are missed opportunites for proper info to enter a magazine.

I reckon that they are just either crap at reviews or are too biased cos of  freebies they may have had.

I thought the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R fitted the D3? I have a set for the Range Rover....with them on the traction systems barely fire!

They do on the 19" rims (as used on the G4 D3s) the Coopers fit the 17" rims so you get more sidewall to play with.

What sort of wierd-ass size is a 17" rim?????? No wonder there are not many tyres for that!

Yeah, it is a bit of a pain, 17" is the smallest they do and even they won't fit a V8 with the bigger brake calipers. There's very little in the way of aftermarket rims too unless you want 20-22" bling and rubber bands for tyres!

I must admit the 19"'s I have are ok - not too big, not too small. Just switched back to my road wheels - the noise I didn't notice has gone - so I obviously did notice the tyre noise!
