Got the Disco today :)  Its a '01 V8.  

The chassis and rest of it seems solid but the rear floor has rusted through.  Obviously, its got to be replaced so what do I need to disconnect before welding it?

Is it just the battery and run a strap to earth or are there other things that need disconnecting first?

Bit of a swine really, 'cos I wanted to spend the money on a lift kit for it but now I'm gonna have to buy meself a mig!  can't let someone else do it :)

While I'm asking, the rev counter doesn't work .... anyone know the common cause or should I just go hunting with the multimeter?

ALL I DID WAS UNDO THE BATT, STRAIGHT FORWARD JOB REALLY, WHILST THE FLOORS OUT GIVE UNDERNEATH A GOOD CLEAN :D

hello,

do you a deal - I'll weld your floor for the cost of lunch if yuo buy my suspension lift kit!  

I'll teach you to weld at the same time if interested.

Battrery off isn't essential unless you have complex ecus that could potentially be affected...

The problem with the boot floor is that it is right over the diesel (or petrol) tank.  it is possible to weld aruond it but personally I would always drop the tank out of the way first - it doesnt take long (unless you have a stupid tow hitch with seized bolts like i did!

I think paddocks sell a replacement floor - cut out the old and weld in the new :-)  with everything prepped up it shouldn't take more than an hour.

I've got a suspension kit for sale.. it was fitted to my disco about 5000 miles ago, so not seen much use!

i have done the rear floor on my 93 disco. not a hard job to be honest ( compared to rear crossmember  :roll: ). as matt says mate it is worth removing the diesel/ petrol tank first. saves making a boo and damaging the tank some how. far to easy to melt a hole in it. iafter i had the old floor out it did only take about an hour to fit the new one.

Did my 93 the other month.

Job completed in 4-hours and a 100 pop rivets.

Had a proper look over the disco today.  I think its got the wrong alternator on it, the rev counter doesnt work and theres a spare wire behind the alternator.  I think this may be the pick-up wire for the rev counter.  There doesn't seem to be any sign of a pick-up near the coil.

The rear floor is rotten as a pear and so is the piece of flat bar under it.  I pushed a screwdriver throught the floor and the bar!  This could get a little more involved!

Under the motor, the outriggers and chassis are in good shape, the sills are good, both inner and outer.    I havn't looked at the footwells properly, couldn't be bothered to have the carpets out yet and can't see too much of the footwells from the outside.  I'll get the rear floor done first before I start looking for more jobs to do!

All in all, it seems to be quite a sound vehicle.

I'm off now to order some toys for it :)

is the rivet gun ok for the mot or does it have to be welded? really like to think id get away with rivets seeing as i cant weld!!

it's better to weld it cus it will be stronger, but so long as you are I think 30cm from a seat belt point or brake mount point you should be ok.. I think the boot floor is too close to the rear seat belt mounts to be allowed, but may be wrong - I'd always weld something like that.

If you can do all the prep work you are probably only looking at an hours time of a decent welder.

i riveted mine in mate and it went through the mot 2 days after i did it. not mentioned at all  :wink:  :D

It should pass mot, the floor is not part of the structual strength of the vehicle, like the floor in the back of a series landy, the body sits on the chassis

I suppose you could fit a wooden one in if you feel like it :wink:

This one seems pretty comprehensive, if you have a look at Tim's post(Muddyweb) - 3rd from the bottom on page 1

Don't think pop rivets would have been up to the job in this case  :roll:
