mot test - true or false ?

hi

is it true or false  that to mot a permanent all wheel drive car such as discovery it should be brake tested on a double rolling road and not on a single one

testing on a single one and then selecting neuteral in both gear boxes and then testing causes damage ?  true or false ?

does this causes damage to the gear boxes ?

and finally anyone know where to take mine for mot in birmingham

it can be tested on a single axle brake roller by putting both the Tbox & g box into neutral with no problems,

However if it has a borgwarner Tbox (Tbox lever says H-N-L) then it cant be done

MOT stations have had a memo to this effect last year, we arn't the only grooup who have this problem, any car with a LSD of any sort will cause potential damage and can harm the tester in extreme circumstances.

The other way is to use a meter that sits on the floor of the car and when driven out on the road the tester can apply the brakes and the tilt meter gives him a reading..........not very effective IMO...........also watch the tester when he try's the hand brake  :o .........seen some very nasty results from these been applied when moving.

True, this is how its done at my local, also he's checking for any pull on the system either left or right and front and rear, also when inspecting the brake system on the ramp he will pay close attention to any obvious problems round the brakes which would normally show up on the rolling road test

As far as the handbrake goes he applies the brake and then lets the clutch out slowly to see how much hold the handbrake can take. Also parking on a hill as he goes round the block

the mot place where i have mine done use a tapley gauge and takes it for a spin

with the new M.O.T computerisation it tells you that you carn't test the brakes on  the brake rollers, you should use the taply meter(however it's spelt)

i have a posi axle on my corvette and the mot guy normally just forgets to do the rears as he knows i keep my car up to scratch,
dunno whats gonna happen with the new computerised mot tho,

I don't think the computerised MOT system needs to see the results of a rolling road test, the examiner has to be satisfied that the brakes are functioning correctly, and the Tapely guage is adequate for this purpose, probably more reliable than the rolling road in fact, whhere a lock-up is a pass even if it locks up at low power because the tyres are s**t.

hi i take mine to a place on short heath road erdington next to the builders merchants, takes it out on the road to test the brakes, he seems very fair

according to LR specs, it's ok to have one set wheels moving at up to 5mph (may be kph).. no idea how fast the roller go, but I stopped using one place when I saw them test it on rollers and do the hand brake in the same way.. asked my local independant who they used and have been going there since - they always take it out on the road and test brakes there.  Never seen them take one of those swing meters with them but not paid a huge amoutn of attention once I knew they knew what they were doing as it were!
