I'm starting to understand.....
« on: February 04, 2006, 12:46:32 »
The rear floor on my Disco 1 is rusted.  Nowt unusual there, so I decided that  rather than paying someone else to do the job, I'd buy the new floor, buy a mig and do it myself.

I now understand why the very nice man at MM4X4 said smugly to me " i did my one ... you'll enjoy that"

I now understand why the metal-sticker-togetherist wanted so much to do the job.

I now understand why I do wood and leave metal to others.

Thats what I've learned from removing the interior and starting to unstich the spot welds.   I haven't got the old floor out yet, I'm only halfway through and haveing some lunch!

Today will be a day of learning.

Shall I take pictures?

Jeeez ... thats more work than my one!  The floor is out, I found it best to use a 8mm drill to make sure its all got.  I was reccommended to use a 5mm bit but I was missing some of the weld and creating more work.  Two of the floor straps need replaceing.  I have also discovered more welding to do around the NSR sealt belt mount.  I have no metal sheet so I'll have to drive the Disco stripped out till I get some.  I'm also going to take the opportunity whilst having the majority of the trimout to remove them roof bars.

Its now knocking off time, its too dark out there to continue.  I have one of the straps welded in place.  Tommorrow is finish removing the second floor strap and then replace the floor.  A lot of the lip around where the floor sits is rusted away, so that will get butt welded instead of drilled and weld filled.

I have to admit, I wrok with wood all week and am finding this metal working quite theraputic ... untill the 3+5 year olds decide to come and "help" Daddy.

If you can local an old door or roof of a car, you can use the steel from them, better than buying new steel

I found an old transit roof very good for chassis plating, nice and heavy duty then the usual steel I use

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

You're better using a proper spot weld removing tool where you can.
