CB Antenna mount

Can any one tell me the best place to mount a CB antenna to give it the best chance of not getting knocked off on the tight bits when laneing? Also was considering one of these Thunderpole starter kits, as adversised in LRO are they any good?

Basically Ive only got the top tip protruding the roofrack, which is very flexible on a Sirio 4000, the base and the stiffer end of the mast is all lower down.

I got the idea from one of the technical http://www.discoweb.org articles.

I've got mine on a gutter mount just to the side of the rear door, the idea being that if it gets hit, then it'll just fall backwards instead of knocked off.

Thats where mine was until instead of just falling backwards the bracket actually sheered into two parts  :(   And I was only going underneath a tree down the driveway into Tatton Park in Cheshire!!

The only place you can put it with some form of saftey to it is the front bumper, but that gives crap transmission as the ground plane is all toward the rear of it.  The best place to put any antennae with regard to transmission/reception is the middle of the roof.

If you manage to find out the definative answer to this quandry, let me know and I'll put mine in the same place!

Is crap transmission really that much of an issue, though?  Most of the time, you're going to be using the CB in fairly close proximity to other vehicles, so it's hardly that much of an problem.  If you're particularly bothered, you can get radials or even electronic groundplane adaptors that fit to the bottom of the aerial.

On a disco the wheel carrier is the best compramise
between performance and durability.
just try to ensure that you get an antenna
with a center or top coil to clear the roof line
or you will suffer dificult tuneing and weak
performance..

Being I intend keeping my disco untill its last days I drilled a hole in the front of the roof just above the internal roof light, good access from behind the light, but not the best thing drilling holes in the roof if you think you are going to sell your motor on.

I'm mounting mine on the rear ladder (when I get 5 mins), and running the cables through the tubular frame into the rear door.  Rear work lamp is going on the top rung too.

Mines on a gutter mount too. A very flexible antenna has withstood some pretty serious undergrwoth.

I like the idea of a spare wheel mount though. I assume that a custom made bracket is used? Anyone got any pics?

Spare wheel mount does seem to make a lot of sense, what about routing the wire back to the cb?

I have just bought a cb and it arrived today. I found a fantastic site called www.4x4cb.com he is extremely useful and has loads of different types of mounts. I have gone for a quick release mount and hoping to mount it on the roof rack bars which stay in place all the time above the drivers head. Those bars if you get me?

I have a long springer aerial and I am going to take the aerial off everytime I use it and also wire in a cigarette lighter plug on the end so I can just plug it in clamp the aerial onto the roof and away I go and nothing is left inside for light fingers!
