HELP!!! our '90 just died - 2.5 N/A engine
« on: February 05, 2006, 12:37:32 »
strange one here and I dont know which way to turn.

History of the problem is that we developed a severe oil leak which turned out to be the gasket for the fuel pump. No big issue, gasket changed, job done.

Started the engine, no problems. Left it ticking over for a few minutes to make sure we had no more leaks or diesel leaks. We did not seem to need to bleed the system

Previous to this some months ago, the stop solenoid went faulty and I also put on a new stop solenoid, which didnt seem to do the trick so I put back the old one. (We had been running it without the plunger in and having to 'stall' the car to stop the engine)

We then run it round the block and this is where the strange even ts happened. The engine would not idle and was probably ticking over at around 2000 revs. I tried turning the throttle back a little to slow it down which seemed to work but when we revved it, it tooks seconds for it to go back to idle.

On the last occasion we tried revving it, the engine stopped and will now not start at all and I dont see why.

I am not very good with diesels and dont fully understand the working (petrol fine, just never needed to work on a diesel to this depth!!)

Anyone any ideas?

How long would the engine tick over if we did have an air block?? We have had the engine running for over 5 minutes and driven about 500yrds around the bloick, so I would have thought that it would have failed before that time if it was air

Does it just simply need bleeding?? (never done that either)
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

Might be around 10.30 to 11.00. I'll give you a bell as I'm setting off. Did you manage to find the manuals or shall I print off the relevant pages from mine

Don't think that's the throttle you've adjusted there Rob. Not sure what it's called but I've played that trick before. Turn it back to where you got it from and you'll find the revs drop back normally. Don't have a piccie just now to describe it to you and the landy's miles away. Look around on top of the pump again and you will see the throttle stop screw.
HTH
Cheers, Karl..

yeeh I got the new pump from Paddocks in the end. All of the units form A+J were the same in that I couldnt tighten the nut. The one from Paddocks is a 'conversion'.

It would have gone on today if the weather was a bit better. I had ot go and get my new wheels today from near Whitchurch so didnt get back til about 1.30ish. I couldnt be bothered getting wet by that time of day

Seeya tomorrow
