Disco series 1 Auto box question
« on: February 08, 2006, 15:49:56 »
Right, I have been looking into changing to Automatic from Manual.  I have got the gearbox already but have a bit of a mystery.

Its to do with the gearbox oil temperature warning light.  I have an early disco (1990) Which doesn't seem to have the facility in the warning lights for a gearbox temp warning light.  I got hold of a instrument panel from a slightly later disco (1992 I think) and not only does that one have the warning light fitted but also some of the warning lights are in a different position.

My question is, does an "early" disco 1 have an auto gearbox overheat warning light, if so where is it on the dashboard ?

Peter,

Auto wasn't an initial option - so it's no surprise you do not have indicator lights for the various sensors!

I did think that was the reason, I do have lots of redundant wires but I guess they are left overs from the range rover, I shall wire up a warning light for it somewhere on the instrument panel.

Thanks guys

when the light comes on should you stop immediately???
mine came on the other day just as i was about at the top of a hill,
i kept on driving gently and it went off a few minutes later,
mind you, the dipstick keeps popping out of the tube about half an inch,
is this a problem,

If the disptick is popping out.. check that your gearbox breathers are clear... it may be a sign that the box is pressurising.  Hopefully that's all it is

There is a key to warning lights that is universal

Green or blue lights - they tell you that something is happening.

Yellow lights - they tell you that something has happened you really ought to deal with as soon as you can.

Red lights - They tell you to stop the car and sort something out before something blows up and hurts you either physically or your wallet.
