I did the silly thing today of looking under my boot und look what I found

I went to Safari engineering today and have been quoted about £400 if they do the whole job or £100 if I do all the cleanin gup and remove the old floor etc and then for them to put another floor in and weld it. So an hours work for welding and £45 for a floor. Damn.

The rubber sound proof matting was soaking so what I have done it put some plastic on the floor and then the rubber mat ontop so hopefully any more water that comes up will hit the plastic and go back down and wont just sit in the foam and rust it away anymore. I know it wont stop it but it will hopefully slow the process down.

How easy / what is involved in removing the old floor?

If you look on Darrens site you'll see that if you are doing all the preparing work, then an extra hour by you and you could just pop-rivet a new floor into place ;)

Ive read that page about 5 times now and I must say it does look do able for my small knowledge.

I dont have half the tools but it would save some money in the long run.

I am sure I might be able to get a mud clubber to help for an exchange of food and drink etc.

How do I know if the wheel arches are gone and if they have what is the next scariest part? How easy is a wheel arch to replace? This could all get so nasty.

Hi m8,

I did my boot floor a couple of weeks ago.  Its not just taking the floor out, you also need to take out all the trim in the back of the motor including the rear seats.  Allow at least 2 hours for removal and the same for re-fitting.

Removing the boot floor and cleaning up the surround will take you around 3 hours and it kills your knees.  There are over 100 spot welds that all need drilling out.  When the floor is out you may find that 1,2 or all 3 of the body straps underneath will need replacing.  These are not expensive, around £50+VAT for the three of them.  If you can find a tame Motor Factors they may let you have them on a returnable basis (MM4X4 did for me).

Hell of a job, to be honest at the time I wished I had just paid the money and had it done for me.  In retrospect, a very satisfying job to accomplish.

With regard to the wheel arch, £171+VAT for a replacement (thats the inner where the seatbelt mounting point is).  Thats about as scary as it gets.  Other than the price, its pretty much the same as the boot floor.  Unpick the welds, clean it up and have the new one welded in.

I'm going down the patching up route with this one, just waiting for a weekend that doesn't rain so I can get on with it!

i didnt take any of the trim outta mine. took me most of the day though. i am a novice when it comes to this sortta thing so if i can anyone can

That rubber matting thing stays wet for ages unless its a hot summer day, i mainly use mine for offroading so i peeled the foam off the mat and just put the rubber back, now it drys loads quicker

That floor is not that bad, even replacing with a new floor yourself is not that big a job, mine was a lot bigger mess holes wise.

Seat belt mountings can be done just use a stronger metal if the mounting is still useable, or see of you can get them out of one of the discos that are being stripped, cut out a section of the arch complete and graft it into yours

After plating use a seam sealer to block up any small holes there is, and over paint the lot

Ironically you could even rivet or screw a floor in, its not structural on these motors, I was going on  holiday the other year and found a large hole in mine, too late to weld it up, so I used a sheet of plastic and kitchen sealer, and temp plated that for the hols, stopped the water getting in though.
