Wot Steering guard

I have a Disco II. (2000 model) I want to put protection on it but there are a number of choices.. wots best in your opinion? first for off road, mill services or some thing else...?

Any suggestions or help appreciated.
It was already broke when i got here... honest!

Looks great and works with my winch bumper fitment.
I only paid £80 from Southdown @ Sodbury last year.

Don't forget that's a show price. They are £115 plus delivery normally.

Cliff's is err.... well....   tested :lol:

I don't know why you want to swap Cliff. The Southdown is brilliant unlike some of the competition.....

I used a defender one @ £48 you have to make a couple of brackets but it took me about 30 minutes (+1 day to get the power steering drop arm bolt out!).  For half the price a couple of brackets were worth it :)

Talking of which, now I have a defender that came with a steergin guard - anyone want a stering guard off my disco?  ;-)

Have you got bull bars on your disco, the steering gaurd attaches to the same bolts that the bars an bumper attach to an its a nice sqeeze trying to fit both, they will fit though, I had to trim a little bit off the front corners to fit round the bottom of the bull bar, make sure you get a steering gaurd of a decent thickness so you don't bend it  :)

(classic rangie sat on 33x12.5x15's with 2"suspension an 2"body lift, 3.5 with 3.9 cam, defender wheel arches. project in the progress)

I have a Southdown guard fitted to mine, with a modified (read: bottom bits chopped off!) Land Rover bull-bar attached to it.

I got mine from Scorpion racing. Nice and solid without those holes that let all of the mud through! Had to take the valance off of course but still need to drill a little off the plastic/foam bull bar to let the jacking ports show. Cost me about £100. Was a tight squeeze to fit to the end of the chassis rails had to use a jack to lever it up into the gap.

Cliff, thats far too clean, for a ton it would need to come pre-mudded!!

had a look at the scorpion one .. very nice, like the idea of having the recovery points on it as it saves buyin jates... no prices on the web site tho :( ,
Southdown one is 125 incl post.. lot o' money when Matt only paid £50 notes... not sure about re-modelin one tho, was it easy?
No bull or A bar fitted yet, lookin for decent one, loads o plasticy ones but not sure i rate these...?

no rebel one for the Td5.. findin it really hard to get off road kit for a series II disco.. do folk not get them dirty or wot :?:  :shock:  :?  :?

be careful
I have a Scorpion winch bumper and 'had' a Rebel Steering guard.
Make sure that the guard attaches on the outside of the chassis legs.
Not the inside.
Otherwise it wont fit.
Hence why i bought a Southdown one  :wink:

Rebel A-Bar will fit with the Rebel steering guard but you have to do a few 'modifications'.

I rang Rebel and asked if their A-Bar would fit with the steering guard. The one with jacking points. Yes I was told, you may have to 'ease' it in with a block of wood but it will fit. Great thinks I, promptly sent off the dosh. Two days later recieves said A-Bar and goes to fit it.

Eventually I realised that the only way it would fit was by grinding off the jacking points and bending both the A-Bar fixing brackets so it would spring between the mounts for the steering guard. Wouldn't have minded but  some time earlier when I fitted the steering the guard the hole centres were a good 5mm out of line with the front mountings and needed  extra slotting to line up with the front bumper mounting bolts.

To say I was annoyed, on both counts, would be an understatement.

Got it all to fit eventually but it cost me a lot of messing about and re-work of the original items . . . . . which I was told on the phone would fit straight on. What a load of b0ll0cks. Why couldn't they just say, 'no mate, it wont fit properly'. In the end I lost the jacking points and the brackets for the A-Bar now cover the recovery loops on the steering guard as well. Good job I can weld, sorted my own solution since.

I was not a happy bunny   :evil:
