Dying TD4...

Our TD4 has the automatic steptronic transmission. I'm not a great fan of autos at the best of times, but Sarah liked the car so who am I to argue  :D

Towards the end of last week it developed a problem. At about 2400 rpm it would start raising and lowering the revs by about 400 rpm. I'm not sure if it was changing up and down gears or just raising and lowering engine revs.

Then, Monday night the traction control and hill desent lights came on when Sarah was on her way home. At the same time the lights on the gear selector went out! Then it wouldn't get above about 45mph and was very reluctant to pull away from a standstill  :shock: Also, the reversing lights have now failed!

Too many black boxes under the bonnet for me, so it's in the garage today for them to plug it in and see what's up. We shall see......

Oh, and I am resisiting the temptation of "I told you so!"  :lol:

Call from garage...

Blown fuse!! That's all it seems it was  :shock: It took the diagnostics system to identify it and reset the fault codes. Whatever happened to simple cars??  :?

If something goes wrong with the 110 I use a big hammer.... if that doesn't fix it I use a bigger hammer...  :lol:

Well, that's a relief.  You could always use your big hammer to jump across the terminals of the fuse.

The garage boss told me it was only a fuse...... apart from the replacement gearbox!!! What a shining wit he is  :lol: Good job he's a good customer!

I am always really careful abou being witty with customers.....

I once phoned a very good customer to let him know his van had arrived from the factory...." looks fantastic, The green really makes it look nice" I said...... "yeah, thought it'd look good in green...." he said..... :shock:  :?  :shock: "ha haha ha" I said..... "whats funny" came the reply

anyway... he called my bluff and won, I needed new underware!

This one is ongoing.....

It's still messing around. The 'D' indicator on the dash flicks on and off. As it does this the gearbox changes down and up. This can go on for a whole journey  

Took it to our local garage. They plug in the diagnostics and nothing came back. But they couldn't read all the ECU. Took it to the local LR specialist and the damn car ran perfectly! They also couldn't find any faults logged on the ECU. That was Tuesday. Picked it up on Wednesday morning and by Wednesday night it was doing it again.... AAARGGGGHH!

Took it in this morning because it was still playing up and it has stopped doing it by the time we got there.... what is it with cars? They know, don't they?!

So the owner of the LR specialist is going to use it for his daily transport for a few days to see if he can replicate the problem.

We shall see......

Only really used them for servicing. They use the LR menu and are half the price of a main dealer. Bit expensive for parts though. But I have access the trade supply, so parts are normally *much* cheaper elsewhere  :D

The Freebie has been with the garage since Friday and been used daily by the owner.... and it has behaved perfectly   We need it for the weekend, so I've got them to go round all the connectors and disconnect, clean and reconnect in the hope that is was a corroded or loose one somewhere  :?

Oh joy......... I absolutely guarantee it will play up the moment we get it back! Flamin' Land Rovers, well, modern ones anyway. At least an old one can be diagnosed and fixed easily.

Hopefully this is the final update in the saga!

Found part of the wiring harness loose and worn through under the battery box. Certainly, this would account for the blowing fuses and maybe the ECU jitters.

We pick it up tonight........  :?

Don't say told you so, my beautiful freelander broke down last thursday half in and out of junction slave cylinder went bang...yes a loud bang clutch damaged. So Chris and Neil have been working hard all weekend in rain on my oil soaked drive to fix it for me .....several hundred pounds lighter it appears to be fixed.

But i love my Freelander

no not as yet but got until end of may to get it sorted, will keep an eye out for Sarah's email.

But at least my Freelanders fixed and im happy for now
