Tyre question
« on: February 16, 2006, 16:30:16 »
I am thinking about putting some mud terrain tyres on my 90 td (pre tdi) what i want to know is will these make the 90 slower, i'm also considering putting a slightly larger tyre on some 235 85 or a similar size, i am currently running on 235 70, will the extra height of the trye make the 90 even more slower, if so i will just stick with my all terrains or i could save up and have a spare set of rims with muds on, what do you think?

Ive just had some 235/85 machos £54 each including VAT, fitted to my 90, They seem pretty good on the country roads @ 50mph. I get the occassional twitch from the back end in the wet. I cant comment on if they make the vehicle slower or not, Ive been told that taller tyres help with fuel consumption and also give higher top end speed (but dont quote me on that). It stands to reason that start off acceleration will suffer though.
Obviously mud terrains give less miles per gallon than all-terrains.
I would suggest if your using the vehicle Daily for work etc and only intend going off road once or twice a month STICK with all-Terrains and get a spare set of wheels with muds on.
The link in my signature to sowdens tyres could offer you a good deal. Depends if you want tyres that are cheap to replace or not. I think my Machos are rated to 60-70mph (not sure though).

Thanks for the help borders, think i will stick with my all terrains for the road and buy some muds on a seperate set of rims for my off roading as i run the 90 daily to school and back so would cost me too much in diesel.

I run 235/85 m/t all the time, good for lanes and every day.  they are just rubbish in standing water on tarmac but not dangerous imho.  I am saving for some nutty tyres for offroading.

Maybe worth noting though is that my m/t are not the most aggressive in the world and aren't remoulds.
