theres a strange noise coming from my landy.
It sounds like something rubbing against someting. It sounds almost identical to the sound you get if you stick your hand out the window, kind of wind rushing by, but I know its not that.
-From the drivers seat it appears to come from underneath and on the drivers side.
-It doesn't happen when clutch is in or in neutral 'coasting'
-it tends to happen most when the accelerator is not pressed eg if i am going down a hill using engine braking, it goes away as you put a bit of accelerator on.
-when I changed my tyres it went away so i though that was the prob, but now its back, and worse.
-I've wobbled wheels and propshafts with no result
any ideas as to the problem?

Mine makes a grinding noise unless I put my foot on the clutch. I am assuming my problem is the gearbox but I am converting it to Auto shortly so am not that worried. I cured it for a while by doing a complete oil change on both the gearbox and transfer box. Might be worth a go.

my old disco did the same and there ws no movement in the prop untill we took it off then we found 2 bearings seized solid and the other 2 baggy as a pencil in a bucket

its about time I chcnged the gear box and axle oils so I'll definately do that.
As for propshaft UJs, as I understand it, it is possible to disconnect on of them and still use the vehicle in 2 wheel drive, is this true for both front and back? I ask as it seems it would be an idea to disconnect the front, and see if it stops the noise. then replace it.
Are Props/UJs expensive? and how about fitting, is it something a keen amateur can do?

easy to take probs off and check, a keen diy'er should be able to do it,
you can drive it with either prop off to check your problem, you will have to put the centre diff lock in otherwise it will just spin the drive flange for removed prop shaft.

I thorougly checked it yesterday, the rear bearings of the front prop are totally shot.
I'd like to get someone else to fit them for me but would rather buy all the bits myself, so what do I need?
As far as I can tell, the yokes etc are OK so I guess its just the "Cross" part I need along with the spring clips. Can anyone tell me what other bits I need, and even better, some part numbers????
ta y'all
