Whats that whining?

I can't work out where its coming from, but when I accelorate I can here a whining noise. Some times its worse than others but then it can just disappear.

Any ideas? And could this be something serious? After a blown head just before christmas and an mot bill costing £860 I really hope it isn't  :?

It could be comeing from your rear propshaft, which may be loose or the rear diff.

I may be wrong but its worth a look.

Definitly with the engine revs as I can hear it when the missus isn't in the car :lol:

I'll check if the rear prop shaft is loose tomorrow. How would I check if I have an iffy diff

I occasionally have a belt that slips but its definitly not that. Different noise altogether. Only happens when I'm moving if that helps?

Not had much luck at all with this. Must admit the noise has been there for awhile now  :oops:

But basically when I accelerate theres a whining noise, if I open the window it doesn't sound louder.

nah ,ya should have come with us,most of the getting stuck bits was down to driver error not tyres  :D ....the landies were on very road bias tyres

Wheel bearings are a first port of call... jack the wheels up and listen for noise / look for movement.

Next might be diff bearings... but this is a bit less common

Thanks I'll take a look tomorrow, although it passed its mot a couple of weeks ago and the noise started before then. Wouldn't it have failed on wheel bearings if it was them?

With any whining noise coming from the drivetrain, I'd always suspect UJ's first!! Easy to check, cheap n simple to replace!

UJ's are well worth checking, but they don't usually manifest as a whining... more often as vibration or squeaking.

Failed bearings should have been caught in the MOT (but I didn't know it was happening when you had a test ;-))   Still well worth checking though

If the whine is there on acceleration, but goes away when you let off you may have an issue with the pinion bearings in the diff or the ring and pinion gears, maybe from lack of oil or contamination (water).  Had it on disco's before..

If it's coming from underneath, on acceleration and consistent with road speed rather than engin espeed I'll say it's the diff.  Drop the oil and refill, if it keeps doing it it keeps doing it, they get progressively worse 'till you decide to replace it.

If it's an engine speed related whine I'd say turbo.  Check that it hasn't got oil contaminated recently as this makes them less efficient and therefore noisey.  Have you had any work done recently on the inlet side? intercooler cleaned anything like that?

Try travelling at speed, dip the clutch, let the revs drop,see if the noise goes away.
Then throttle back up to the revs you were at before you dipped the clutch (keeping the clutch depressed), listen again.
Decide at what point it's making the noise.

This will tell you whether it's engine related or load related.

I've had a whine for ages which only appeared under load. Sounded just like a diff whine from the front. It was wheel bearing related but I ended up replacing the stub-axle and inner bearings too. Whine's now gone.

Thought about failing alternator bearings? Also an alternator will whine/whistle under a load aproaching its operating limits. When rabbit is cold she sounds like she has a turbo fro a few minutes as the Alternator replenishes the duff battery.
