Didn't the post 'face-lift' Discoverys have amber/running side-lights incorporated inthe indicator unit?

NO!

Headlights must be white, not too sure how it works for foreign registered trucks/cars with yellow headlamps (EEC exemption??)

Yes, but they also have a white sidelamp built into the headlamp assembly ...

They certainly help with visibility, and I think they look good, if a little American.  Incidentally, the Volvo S40 shares this feature ...

Yes during daylight hours. But red, pink or any colour that could be confused for red are illegal. This ruling does not apply to any other wheeled or motorised vehicle for road use. For them it's white only.

So they are allowed to be purple until it goes dark? The ones I've seen were white bulbs with a Purple screen on them.

White sidelights, white or yellow headlights.  May depend on age but it certainly was the case in the past.

i can say without doublt that a headlight must be white at all times if switched on.i had one of those colour headlight covers on a bike i was riding and was pulled over. i was told in no certian terms to remove it. even with the light turned off    and that was in the middlee of the day. a head light must produce white light only unless from another part of europe where yellow will be alloud.
cheers

I would disagree, the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations specify that headlamps can be white or yellow.

Additionally they allow sidelights to be yellow "if incorporated in a headlamp which is capable of emitting only a yellow light"

I think there is (or was) something about country of manufacture. Cars imported from america can still be seen on the street that have the indicators built into the break lights. I have a kwak 600 imported from the states that comes with american spec lighting i.e. the front indicators are ON (but at a lower intensity) unless you are indicating then they errrrrrr indicate. Some MOT stations passed them with a comment such as "American wiring?" others wouldnt. I disconected them in the end even though I thought they made me more visible just to avoid the MOT gamble.

I remember a guy used to have an Artic with an American Trailer, I.E. The Indicator was red and part of the main cluster. He got stopped at a weigh station one day and the tester thought it had a wire crossed until he explained it.

Shortly after he was made to fit some aftermarket british lights to it.
