Im Confuddled Now!
« on: February 27, 2006, 23:56:41 »
O.K the story so far.

Had a problem with a water leak on the Disco, so replaced the 'P' gasket, water pump and thermostat. - Found out the the thermostat was faulty so changed for a genuine part.......

Ran it today round home and it was fine....just blew some out of the header tank - think i over filled it. Drove to work tonight (24miles) and the last 3 the heater blew intermitantly hot and cold. Thought this was an air lock, and thought i could top it up once it had cooled down. Went back to it after it had cooled down, header tank was still full but the top rad hose was full of air.

So thinking that it would draw it from the header tank i set of on the return journy home, another 24 miles, only for the temp gauage to hit the top quater within a mile from home.

So whats going on, anyone got any ideas as im now at a loss. The engine isnt produceing any smoke, other than the compulsary black smog when i toe it. There is no loss in power or performance either, and all the hoses on the cooling system seem fine??

Thanks in advance

Joe

not an expert but I would still be thinking on the lines of an air block somewhere  :?
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

Gotta be air.  It will cause your heater to act up as the pockets work through the heater, and your temp gauge as well when the air pocket hits the temp sender it'll read wrong.  The air can also cause the thermostat to open goofy.  I would've thought after that drive it would purge, though?
If it's not leaking, it's out of oil

Did you fill the system by the header tank or the top of the radiator?

Presumin its similare to the VM engined range rovers then they don't refill particuarly well if you put the water in the header tank. The range rover radiator has a bung in the top that you use for refilling.

you may already know this in which case its got be something else, but its all ways best to check the basics first.

I've just had an almost identical experience with my T/diesel van - I was alol set for an engine rebuild, but that little voice made me check the flow through the radiator - virtually zero.  New rad cured it - but why it was blocked I've no idea, as it's always had plenty of  antifreeze.

Might be worth putting a hose through it (unless you've been offroad and its full of mud on the outside....)

Im shamed to say that the disco hasnt got muddy for a while, so the rad is ok. I flushed everything through with the garden hose too when i changed all the other bits and bobs. I filled via the point in the top of the stat housing, doesnt fill very well from the header tank.

Booked it in today to the local garage, who are going to take a look - they thought it may be a cylinder head.
