Chattering Noise on V8
« on: March 01, 2006, 13:17:22 »
Hello helpful knowledgeable people of the world,     , My father has a RRC carburettor V8, lpg conversion . There is a chattering noise that two of us share differing views on what it is. This is not a particularly high mileage engine btw. Oil pressure is a hot and running 40 lb. The noise is more pronounced when accelerating and when engine is ticking over it is extremely quiet. The noise does seem to increase with revs and does sometimes disappear when hot. Personally i think it is either small end  bearing or camshaft / follower. The old man on the other hand suspects Timing Chain.

The engine seems to have good power for a 3.5 carb.
Please help as it is driving me nuts and i dont really want to strip parts of the engine unneccesarily and i do realise it is difficult to diagnose when you havent heard the noise but if anybody requires further info i will do my best to help.

Cheers in advance
Steve

mine has a tapping noise which is a follower occasionally and i had a chattering noise as you describe which turned out to be a belt idler pulley on the front on its way out, does it sound internal?

Mine has/had a similar if not the same noise with the same symtoms but didnt do it all the time. I also thought it was a little end or a follower as it seemed to be coming from the right hand side of the engine and was to high a note and "tappy" for bottom end noise.  It went one for maybe a week and then dissapeared and hasnt come back "yet".

If you can get the engine to make the noise on demand use a long hollow tube as a Stethscope to try and locate where the noise is coming from.

Piston slap, weak valve spring, dodgy follower, exhaust amnifold blowing, like you say hard to diagnose without hearing.  Turn the radio up

Just a thought but is there anything to control end float on the cam on a V8. Mr Haynes is unclear on this unless i need glasses.
