As i was saying earlier before my post disapeared into the abyss. My 300tdi has just been in for a cylinder head gasket change.
My dad picked the motor up for me today, and when i got home about 7ish went to take it for a spin, when i found all my CD;s had gone appart from the disk in the player and the other 2 in the passengers door pocket
So now im angry because i got a £550 bill, and 8 albums missng from my collection. The garage has the usual sign, valuables left at owners risk, but i have since found out that the vehicle was sent to another garage for the work.
I trusted this guy as i have used him for 5 years for all my cars, as have my parents and i also use him for trailer hire for my business
So where do i stand,..... any advice?

dont worry about the sign it dont mean a thing. Had my back window broke in a car wash and the garade had the sign up but when i contacted c.a.b about it they said if you payed for the service they are liable and they payed up. At the end of the day it is theft from you vehicle. Which the sign wont cover. go see c.a.b and they will help you out also have a talk to the police and see what they say. good luck and stand firm

Speak to the garage tomorrow (if they're open) if not then Monday and explain the situation.
After they have had a chance to explain and if they don't want to know about it, tell them that you're going to report the theft to the Police once you've finished this call.
If the garage don't have an answer then report it as a theft from a motor vehicle and leave it in the hands of the Police.
Remember: You had a contract with that garage to undertake the work, not any substitute company, so as far as you are aware the theft occured on their property, unless
they
admit it went elsewhere for the work!! In which case you also question the point of giving them the work in the first place.
You will have to pay the garage for the work carried out, unless you are unhappy with that work, or
you
could get into problems under Civil law! This is a case of theft, not bad workmanship!!
Good luck with whatever you think is best.

First make sure the cds that went missing would not embarass you. i.e Westlife album, Chas and Dave and all the other stuff which I know absolutely nothing about.

Just to echo what's already been said...
First, talk to the garage and see what they say. Tell them that you are going to have to report it as a theft if they plead ignorance.
Not wanting to put a downer, but you are going to need to prove that the CD's were there, else it will just be a case of your word against theirs... the Police will likely tell you the same thing.. without evidence, they can't take any action.
As for the sub-contracting of the work... that's not really a factor. You contracted the garage to do a job on your vehicle... they passed on some or all of that work to a sub-contractor. It's not uncommon, nor is there anything especially wrong with it. If the sub-contractor has the faciltities to skim / pressure test the head, and your garage doesn't (for example), then it would be a perfectly normal thing to do.
Best of luck

my manager took his car to the garage, when he got it back there was £70 of cds missing. he kept phoning the garage untill they was sick of hearing from him, and they paid for them.
then my manager found the discs in the back of the seat where he had forgotten he put them.
result. :D :D :D

Well i rang the garage this morning, and they said they would investigate. They called me back an hour later and suprise suprise had found them in the workshop........... they are going to get someone to bring them out to me at work next week.
No new chassis yet, project on hold due to wanting to change the discovery, have had a run of bad luck with it since January ive fitted a new water pump, new power steering pump, had the headgasket done and the head skimmed, new oile filter hoses which are now leaking again, and new stat, and a new P Gasket......... and have been told by the garage my alternator has a noisey bearing lol.
So anyone want to by a nearly new discovery??
