This weekend, my 90 NA broke majorly. Was happily cruising home at about 60 when the gearbox suddenly jumped out of gear and no matter what gear i selected, would not get any power, so started to pull into a layby and then the power steering went too and the battery light came on on the dash board? Pulled over, turned off the engine, and started it again,. and all went well for another hour or so then it did the same thing, so again, stopped in and again it went fine. Then got another 3 miles or so and then it totaly failed. Wouldn't even start, would just sit there with the starter motor going but no ignition. Left it for about 5 mins and then worked fine. Left untill this morning and not starting at all!! Any ideas as to what the problem is? Cheers in advance.
Rob

p.s When you change gear in a 90, is there meant to be a huge clunking noise like something is very loose? Cheers,
-Rob-

The power steering and the battery light coming on at the same time would suggest that the belt that drives the alternator and pump had failed or the pulley on the end of the crankshaft was unable to drive the belt perhaps?

But to have no drive through the gearbox at the same time would seem a stunning coincidence.

What I'm not clear on is when you were pulling over when it first happened was the engine still running?

I think I misundertood - as you were pulling over the engine was running but you couldn't get any power from it. A similar thing happened again and now it won't start.

I'm with Mike on this - check there's some fuel in there or that it's reaching the engine.

I ran low on fuel and the damn thing sloshed the remnants up and down the tank sometimes leaving me with no power. Engine would run but no power. Limp to filling station and one fill up later all was well.

You may have an intermittent air leak in teh fuel line which would explain why it worked for a bit and then packed up again.

Mike
