.......and he (Ken) misses the point that a parent driving their kids to school want them to be safe, the stance and ruggedness of a 4x4 provides this assurance over, say, a plastic smart car perhaps.  Maybe Ken should focus on getting the police to rid the streets of the hooligans/muggers etc that provide parents with such worries?

One of the biggest issues here is that *most* of the people driving their kids to school should be banned.

I walked to school for the best part of 8 years.... half a mile each way.  With my mum when I was young, and on my own (often on my bike) when I was older.

If people who lived within a 1/2 or 3/4 mile radius of the school had to walk their kids in, I suspect the problem would go away quite quickly...   and we might also stem the increasing child-obesity problem we have in the country.

I know, I know... there is always a good reason why it's vital that the car needs to be used... but I suspect that as is normal in these cases, those who shout loudest are far from blame.

I think the idea of the "Walking Bus" which seems to be spreading is a fantastic one. Parents take it in turns to walk a whole load of kids to school - it's safe as there's parental supervision, and gives the kids exercise! Keeps the school gates clear at the start and end of the day - there's loads of kids get knocked down due to running between cars. It's not just Disco bonnets that hide them either - as Neil mentioned on the radio - the MPV's are growing. The new Espace is huge, and the "smaller" ones are growing - the Zaphira's tall, as is the Scenic. (lets forget about the 4x4 Scenic, shall we?)

I cycled for most of my school life. I've never been as fit since!

Just listened to the mp3 thanks ben.

As someone who lives in London and drives around it daily, I see plenty of 4x4s running round London.
Most of them I see are driven by women doing the school run.

 The main problem as I see it is that people buy 4x4s as Neil said for their perceived protection as the car makers push the message that these are rugged go anywhere cars that command the road.

Most of the cars I see pulling up outside schools are people-carriers with 4x4 Mercs, BMWs  and other soft-roaders making up a small amount of the traffic outside schools.

The main problem is there are too many people using cars to get there kids to school. These people try to get as close to the school entrance as possible, which means their'll stop in the middle of the road to drop their kids outside the school. This often means a queue of cars, people-carriers and 4x4s waiting to stop outside the school, holding up buses and others.

Another problem is the standard of driving, most of the people I see driving these people-carriers and 4x4s dont how to park them without leaving a gap big enough to get a bus through. the car makers should offer training in how to drive these cars through confined spaces.

Now if Ken wants to do something about this he should provide Free school buses as in the US, also all children should get free travel on buses and trains.

Oh by the way where Ken lives in the borough of ealing there is an awful lot of Mercs, BMWs, Volvos and the like perhaps he feels intimadated by these as he walks out to his chauffer driven goverment car.

And by the way I wont be voting for Ken.
