Hi all, I've duplicated this post in here in the hope I might get some answers.

Right you lot, I need some help. Father in law has a 3.0 td Nissan Patrol. 12 Months old, nice motor. It overheats. Normal running is fine. When towing a loaded trailer uphill with the boot down, it starts to overheat. It's been in to Nissan who say there's nowt up. Any ideas? Feel free to state the obvious.
Will be having a butchers tonight or tomorrow so any advice would be gratefully recieved.
Cheers, Karl..

The obvious things :

1) Check that the thermostat is working
2) Check for coolant leaks

See if both the top and the bottom hoses are hot.  (mind your  bodily parts if the engine is running)

Dont know if you have taken it off road or not, but if you have and you have been through water holes, the radiator may be blocked. Check you can see through the fin area(s) of the radiator. (Easy at night with a torch)

I did have a radiator some years ago where the manufacturer was 'enthusiastic' with the black paint on its rebuild, causing slight overheating :)

Failing that, get the mechanics to sit in when it is under the load and ask them to explain why the gauge is bending the needle, that should work
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

My disco did very similar things after blowing the expansion tank on the M62 with the caravan on the back.

Fine solo just couldn't pull the 'van

It took 6 weeks & a strip down to find that the head gasket had gone. It didn't show on the compression test or on the analyser in the expansion tank.

I agree with richard B, I have heard of that one too,

Also, blocked oil cooler ( if fitted) will have the same effect as a blocked rad, oil can get to 120 /130oc in an engine if worked. old oil or wrong oil type?

Thanks for the help guys. I did say state the obvious didn't I? Nothing wrong that I can see. :? Coolant levels great, warm throughout, no blockages, thermostats OK, even drilled a purge hole in the 'stat. Back flushed the whole system. Nothing. Cant check the oil cooler but the oils changed every 3k for semi sympathetic (he's an ex haulage contractor, he has a thing about changing oils and filters). Would have liked to have run a compresion test but didn't have the right adapter. Then I phoned the Nissan dealer. Would seem the vehicle is subject to a recall. Been on the blower to Nissan technical but they can't/wont tell me what the recall is. This is the second Patrol he's had and the second that's been subject to a recall. The last one went in @ 15k for a new engine!! The saga continues!
Cheers, Karl..
