There are a few P38a owners here - I've only ever offroaded L322 Range Rovers (the new ones)

What sort of mods are you after, as I can help with that (being a bit of an anorak ;-) )

Hi, want to get it sorted for greenlaning but i have to be a bit careful as its a daily driver, will spend most of its life on the motorway.

Thinking all terrain tyres, manual inflation kit for the EAS, anything else that should be on the list? Sold the wheel arch protectors (cant find these for love nor money!) and bull bar from my last P38 on ebay after i sold it so im a bit [!Expletive Deleted!] off with myself lol

If theres any events, meet ups etc this summer i'll be interested

I have a 98 P38, I have done some laning with it, aslo done apy and play day a Bures,  I was well impressed with it off road, I done most parts the 90's and Disco's were doing.

Up the steep hills it was very good, help's having traction control, only bit of damage was the rear bumper, managed to split that.

I think a few people there were surprised it went where it did.

I'm running standard tyres, no mods apart from bolt on styling goodies.

yep- 3 inches wider, 10.5 inchers longer and a few inches taller. suppose i'll have to avoid tighter lanes

You can fit 247/75 MTR's and they will only rub on dropped suspension setting. Best manual suspension kit is AirBagMan on from Australia as it has the taps on.

For just laning I would remove bottom of the front bumper, fit diff guards and a good rear recovery point at least. If you have the LR Type III tow bar fitted, just remove it and fit a rated Jate ring through the type 3 hole.

I wouldn't bother with the arch protectors as they will just fall off when you catch them on a tree or bank. Best advise I can give is to fit side bars. If you take it to play days and go into the 90/110 sides deep ruts you will keep slamming the bottom of the doors in. Fitting the side bars wil stop this :)

For serious off-roading you'll need to sort out front recovery points, trim rear bumper, fit some 33'' tyres to give some extra room, fit a fuel tank guard, and lift it by about 1.5". Then you'll just have the approach, departure and ramp over angles to content with, but apart from that obvious drawback the P38 is excellent off-road.

The side bars were custom made by a friend and were very neat in that they bolted on through existing bolt holes.

I originally had some brackets made to do the same, but when they arrived the design meant I would lose about 3/4" of ground clearance at the sides. If this is ok for you  - you are welcome to have them FOC. Just need to pick them up near Cambridge/Newmarket. You could then have tubular or box section side sills welded on.

P38A was the internal project name at LR, simple as that  L322 is latest RR.

Some harsh people have said that P38 was used as it was just a 'filler' until they could produce a proper RR :(  - I just ignore them

The P38a is a nice vehicle and *IS* a Range Rover - I tried to buy one once - and then some git ran my deposit off the road :(

I used to off-road a 38a, but have since sold it to make way for the Disco ...

It was fitted with the wheel arch protectors that you speak of, along with the standard L-R bullbar. It ran on 245/70-16 BFG A/Ts on 7x16 Disco 2 rims (the largest tyre size that will fit into the spare wheel well without the aid of a sledge hammer!).

The only other thing I did was to remove the bottom of the spoiler and foglights when off-roading ...

P38a is incorrect...

It should only be called 38A or Pegasus....

Pegasus was the official project name....

38A was the buidling that the Range Rover was designed/first built in at Solihull - and was adopted as the unofficial project name.

It was never officially known as the P38A - as this is just giving it two names  :roll:

pegasus was the name of the chosen styling proposal, 38a was the codename of the project when it started in 1990 (after the building) so it became p38a. P38 has a ring to it to thats what its usually called
