You didn't say what year...

Have you checked the fuse box on the engine bay.The one on the bulkhead above where the passengers righ foot would be.Well there is on a 300Tdi

I don't have my books to hand but I think there should be four fuses in there.

Ian,

When you say you have voltage to the starter motor, do you mean the main cable or the single white/red wire that terminates with a push on plug?

If there is nothing on any ignition position, it could be that the main feed to the ignition switch has become detached. I think that's the thicker brown cable behind the dash.

I would remove the dash binnacle, but be a little cautious in case a wire has become detached from the ignition switch, as it may be in a position to make earth contact, probably a good idea to temporarily disconnect the earth from the battery.

I'm on my 3rd ignition switch now, so it may even be that.

I would put my money on ignition too - bottom bit has numbers on the connection which correspond to the following wires -
1.................white/red
2.................brown
3.................white
5..................orange/white

My series 3 did the same and it was just the wires at the back of the barrel had come loose.

thanks for the help, checked ingition switch that seems ok, BUT the solenoid on the starter seems to be the culprit, massive short when you try to engergize it. all fine with the wire from the switch disconnected. so new starter motor needed.
a new soleniod is "from £120 depending on which one"
a complete starter motor is £75  :?

oh well
